Your questions about the psychic reading process help me explain what I do, and give me an opportunity to write about my philosophical approach to my work. I've included a great story on judging the accuracy of a psychic reading. Thank you for writing!

If you're not in Manhattan, consider a phone session. There's a certain intimacy to being on the phone I find conducive to psychic readings. It's presence of mind, not physical presence that matters most in a reading.

One-hour sessions are recorded as mp3 files.

When making an appointment, leave me your phone number, time zone and preferred appointment times!

Questioning the
Psychic: About Private Sessions

Greetings!

Z. C., a prospective client asks, "Derek, do you give advice on what should or should not be done? Or do you only describe the future that you see?"

Z, when I'm performing a psychic reading, I avoid giving advice on what my client should or should not do. If I asked for psychic visions with only those two options in mind, I wouldn't be serving my client very well. For me to say a client should or should not do something means I'd have to judge his or her situation. And I try not to judge. I strive to be neutral as I call for psychic visions. In my readings, I'm always exploring greater options, thinking in terms of what "can and will" be done.

When I hear the word "or" in a client's question, I am spurred to think about possibilities. Intuitive thought is not categorized in an either/or framework. Rather than answering questions in terms of "this or that", I look for "this, that, and what else?". I think the Universe operates on the principle that anything is possible. Most either/or type of questions have variable answers.

If you are ever unsure if you have followed your intuition in making a decision, ask yourself if you have been thinking in terms of a 'this or that' dynamic. 'This or that' is a construct created by the conscious, thinking mind, which is diametrically opposed to the intuitive, psychic mind. Intuitive, psychic thought is limitless. Conscious, analytical thought is limiting. When you get a psychic reading, remember that you are not consulting someone to tap into a conscious, thinking mind. You're asking someone to access a mind that dreams, creatively, without care for logic. The psychic mind's visions are often regarded, at least at first, as "outside the box."

Z, I find your use of the word "only" in your second question interesting! When you ask, "Or do you only describe the future that you see?", you imply that the future I see would be a disappointment! I can't control how a client feels about information that comes to me. Sometimes, we're not happy about the options life is presenting us. A psychic is an artist who paints pictures of potential futures. I go about my work with an intent to inspire. I must be realistic in my approach, but imaginative as well. It's a balancing act. I consider it my job to share a valid, inspiring perspective with my client about whatever topic is introduced. Being a psychic carries a great responsibility because ideas are powerful. A querent has the option to take or leave the insights of any psychic.

Z. C. also asks, "Derek, if you are wrong, do I get my money back?"

Sorry Z, I don't offer refunds. Who's to say what is ever wrong or right? I have been "wrong" about more than a few of my psychic visions. Yet I have received many great testimonials about how "right" my psychic visions have been. Testimonials help me understand how psychic insights work, but I take them with a grain of salt, because I know that what is wrong today can be right tomorrow, and vice versa. I caution my clients against thinking of anyone's psychic insights in terms of wrong or right.

I remember performing a psychic reading, years ago, for a young woman who was about two months pregnant. She'd kept her pregnancy a secret, even from her husband, because she wasn't entirely sure the child was his. She'd already had two kids with the guy, and didn't want another. In fact, she was wondering how she was going to carry on in the marriage. She came in asking whether or not I saw her having the baby she was carrying, and if I thought it was her husband's.

What a dilemma-- for both her and me! After a bit of fretting on my part, but little deliberation (for a psychic can not deliberate-- that would be thinking) I told her I saw her having the baby and staying with her husband. The baby seemed like his to me.

Upon hearing this, she burst into a ball of tears. She hated this answer, and was so upset by it that she literally ran from my office. I remember feeling terrible, and thinking, "Well, I'll never be seeing her again." About two years later, she showed up for an appointment with a newly born infant in her arms. "What happened?" I asked.

"I aborted that child," she replied. "My husband and I went into therapy. We're doing fine now! This is our new baby."
I think of this story every time someone asks me how accurate I am. My answer was both wrong and right, depending on when you judged it. The day my client paid me- trust me- she wanted her money back! Later, she was happy with my work and showed up for another reading!

Carla asks, "Derek, how many questions can be asked during a session?"

Carla, ask as many questions as time allows! You can ask your own questions, or come with none, and let me ask questions for you. I try to be creative about asking questions.

A client might say to me, "I want to leave my job. Do you see me leaving it?" Before I respond, internally, I begin asking a series of my own questions about my client's situation. What are her talents? Is she cultivating those talents? Is fear, or insecurity, influencing this outcome? Who might she look to to provide an opportunity? What function do I see her performing in her work? Is there a basic physical gesture that could illustrate what she would be doing in the future?

By replacing my client's original question with questions like these, I can paint a fuller, more colorful, picture of her current circumstances and potential future.

Smiles,
Derek
