presents

In this newsletter I thought I would help you with your holiday shopping. It's getting to be THAT time of year, I mean the holidays of course. To help you out I thought I would put together a list of healthy gift options. In my mind, gifts can be healthy and fun at the same time. Even if you don't necessarily like the items I have chosen, perhaps they will help stir up some of your own creative ideas. Some of the best gifts are very simple but thoughtful and personal. I hope you find my suggestions helpful.

CANP talk

Join Me at the Osher Center
I will be doing a talk this Thursday on Non-hormonal Approaches to Menopause November 13th from 12- 1PM at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. It will be an interactive discussion with an opportunity to see and feel some of the herbs used for women's health. Here is the link for more info.

Don't forget! I am offering integrative women's health consultations at the Osher Center Monday mornings. Make an appointment to see me there. If you are uninsured there are funds that may cover the cost of your visit. Call 353-7700. There is more info about the Osher Center at the website.

Guided Imagery and Beyond. This is a great new book with stories by practitioners and patients about healing and transformation with imagery. It is edited by Sue Ezra and Terry Reed, the founders of Beyond Ordinary Nursing and Integrative Guided Imagery. Here is a link to their book.

Coming in 2009: Integrative Women's Health Text. I have written a couple of chapters for a new integrative women's health text that will be released in 2009. The book is part of the Integrative Medicine Library Series published by Oxford edited by Dr. Andrew Weil. There are many wonderful contributors including Rachel Remen, Joan Borysenko, Tieraona Low Dog, Victoria Maizes and many others. I'll keep you posted on the release date!

Healthy Gift Ideas

Books: Good Enough to Eat
One of my favorite things to give is a good book. Recipe books and books about food make great gifts. A number of good books have come out in the last few years. Here are some ideas from our shelves:
Omnivore's Dilemma
Healthy recipes and books for kids

Ahhhhh.... Relaxation
How about a gift certificate to a spa?
As you know, most of us do not take enough time for relaxation and rejuvenation. Sometimes a gift certificate to a massage therapist or a spa is just the impetus we need to take better care of ourselves.
Here a listing of spas in the SF Bay Area
How about a CD for Relaxation and Stress Reduction?
Guided imagery CDs for relaxation and healing

Exercise is Fun
Walking.
I think walking is a great way to stay physically active. It gets us outside and reconnects us with nature. Walking builds strong bones and promotes balance to prevent falls. Here are some ideas:
Books about walking
How about a pedometer? Pedometers help you objectively measure how much exercise you are really getting. 10,000 steps is the goal. It's a lot more work than you think!
Yoga for the Whole Family
Yoga DVDs- for kids too. Yoga promotes flexibility, strength and body awareness. My preferred type of yoga is Iyengar. It's nice to start out with a class to learn the poses then use a DVD to strengthen your home practice.
How about some equipment or clothes ?
Wii are Fit. I have heard really good things about this software program. The whole family can bowl, play tennis, etc. together in the living room! It's on my wish list. Here is info about the whole package (if you can find it)

For Those Who Have Everything: The Gift of Health
What about those people on your list who have everything they need? Think about giving a donation on their behalf to an organization that provides health care. Here is a list of nonprofits in the SF Bay Area.

Do you have other gift ideas that you'd like to share with others? Perhaps a favorite nonprofit that you like to donate to? Send your ideas to me and I will include them in the next newsletter.

Energy Efficient Power Strips
Have you heard about the new "smart" power strips? They are a great way to save energy and the environment. When you turn off the computer it turns off all the other peripherals that are plugged into the strip as well. You can check it out at this website. There are many different types available, this one is $31. When you turn off your electronics but leave them plugged in, especially the new HD TVs, you are still using energy. Think about all of those cords you have plugged in and whether using a strip like this might save you money and save the environment. Another gift idea?
