What Stunts Women's Careers?
The Harvard Business Review recently announced that one of the biggest limitations women have in advancing in their career is their lack of confidence. There are four main low-confidence behaviors that have limited women's success in their careers. These range from being overly modest to not speaking up enough.

Welcome In Some Change
Change is a scary thing, but sometimes it is necessary. Don't let the fear of change hold you back from travelling down a new path or breaking into a different career. Marla Tabaka, a life and business coach, suggests that, "your life may be long overdue for a change". If you're unhappy or stressed do something about it!

Companies Need to Invest More in New Workers
Businesses complain about difficulties in finding the right candidate for open positions and blame the education system for a failure to produce skilled works and the government's refusal to grant access to more high-skill immigrants, but author Peter Cappelli suggests that companies' expectations may be to blame and points to on-the-job training and probationary periods for new employees as possible solutions.

Lack of Professional Confidence Steering Females From Engineering
A recent study published in the American Sociological Review investigates why women are less likely than men to stay as engineering majors in college. The main reason turned out to be a lack of professional confidence and not a concern about having a family, as was previously thought. Although women in universities get the same training as men, they have noticeably less confidence in their engineering capabilities thus swaying them away from the field.

New Type of Eating Disorder on College Campuses
A study from the University of Missouri-Columbia reveals that college students are restricting food intake to save room for alcohol. "Drunkorexia", a term coined by media, is the combination of both an eating disorder and heavy alcohol consumption. This type of disorder affects college women three times as much as men, and the adverse effects of damage done to both the mind and body are detrimental.

Academicians Guide to Talking with the Media
As a subject matter expert, you may be asked to weigh in on studies or stories in the media.  Would you know what to say or, more importantly, what not to say?  Read the media rules of engagement before you represent your university.

Halloween Too Spooky a Day to Give Birth?
A study in the October issue of Social Science & Medicine reveals a 5.3 percent decrease on Halloween and a 3.6 percent increase in spontaneous births on Valentine's Day.  The findings raise the possibility that pregnant women may be able to control the timing of spontaneous births and suggest that psychological factors might affect pregnancy.

NSAID Use May Lower Risk of Colorectal Cancer Death in Women
Researchers examined the use of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) among more than 160,000 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative and found an association between NSAID use and a reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

FDA Safety Review of Birth Control Pills Containing Drospirenone
The FDA is currently reviewing if there is an increased risk of blood clots for women who take birth control pills containing drospirenone. Although the FDA has not declared a conclusive finding from their report, their study seems to suggest a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for women who take birth control pills containing drispirenone to those who take other non-drispirenone containing hormonal contraceptives.

Men vs. Women, Who Is Funnier?
Through an empirical study by researchers at the University of California-San Diego, the debate has finally been settled, who's funnier, Men or Women? Well, the answer is Men, but just barely. The findings from the report about who men and women think are funnier and who they actually respond to as funnier are both surprising and a bit depressing.

U.S. Pharmaceutical Companies Falling Behind
Major pharmaceutical companies are losing big drug patent protections, and are merging together to fight to stay alive against cheaper generic drug makers.

Volunteers in San Francisco Help Clear Local Marinas
Volunteers and researchers with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) are helping remove the invasive, non-native kelp specials, Undaria from San Francisco's local marinas. AWIS East Bay Chapter member, Dr. Marianne Kavanagh, a research biologist, is also partnering with SERC to expose more girls to science by enlisting them to volunteer in this effort.

Understanding How Work Really Gets Done in Organizations
When it comes to work, are you an energizer (proactive/positive) or a de-energizer (avoider/pessimist)?  Inspired by the book "The Hidden Power of Social Networks: Understanding How Work Really Gets Done in Organizations" Gretchen Rubin of Huffington Post writes more about individuals who emulate one or the other type of mindset and the effect it has on the rest of the group (whether at work or at home).

Survey of Mothers Reveals Shared Concerns
A major new study from the Working Mother Research Institute sheds light on how moms feel about the choices they make.  What Moms Choose: The Working Mother Report, surveyed 3,700 mothers and concluded that moms who work and moms who stay home aren't so different.  Both groups struggle with guilt and worry.
