ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Issue II

Greetings!

Have you ever used Google images to search "scientist"?  You won't find a decent image of a female professional in the STEM disciplines.

We want to change that.  AWIS broadens the representation of what a scientist looks like by using images of actual AWIS members in its online and print publications which is why we are calling on you to submit photographs!

Work Experience Includes Social Currency
Who you know matters--if you're a man. In fact, it might help you find your next job without even searching.  A recently released study shows that men fare better than women with informal access to employment and are recruited through social networks to fill highly skilled jobs.

New Study Finds Culture Drives Gender Gap in Spatial Abilities

Former Harvard President, Lawrence Summers, suggested that innate abilities might be the reason that women are underrepresented in science and math careers.  According to new research by study author Moshe Hoffman, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego's Rady School of Management, that doesn't hold true.  Hoffman found that women in cultures where men are in charge score lower than their male counterparts on a test that measures the ability to rotate objects in the mind's eye. But in communities where women are at the forefront, the gender gap disappears.

It takes a village

Education

Encouraging Students to Explore STEM
Recognizing that the low numbers of women in STEM may be hampering American economic growth, San Jacinto College has actively marketed STEM education to female students in recent years.  The associate vice chancellor of learning, Dr. Catherine O'Brien, holds a degree in marine microbiology and encourages educators to introduce students to the physical world around them.  "Life is a banquet, and children of all ages need to be encouraged to sample a bite of everything. Eventually, they will find that thing for which they have a passion."

Low College Prep Scores Prompt STEM Ed
The release of college-admission testing results in Illinois raised concerns among educators about college-readiness across all four ACT testing subjects but especially science.  With two national laboratories-Fermi and Argonne-located in the Chicago area science advocates urge a greater focus on STEM.

Health

Secondhand Smoke Not a Problem at University
The number of American universities enacting 100% smoke-free policies has been on the rise since 2000.  Nearly 530 colleges across the country now prohibit smoking on all campus grounds including athletic stadiums, restaurants, and outdoor spaces.  Most policies have reportedly resulted from grassroots efforts driven by students and campus employees.

Women Loose more Sleep than Men over Money
While both men and women may suffer from sleepless nights, women are more likely to lose sleep over finances than men.  An online study polled 1,000 women and men who received average wages.  Since women make the bulk of financial decisions in the household, the findings are not necessarily surprising.  Furthermore, since they often juggle multiple responsibilities, the added weight of financial woes may compound their worries.

Science and Technology

Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoons
Get a sneak peek at the Union of Concerned Scientists 2012 calendar cartoons.  Twelve artists created editorial cartoons that lampooned special interests' manipulation of scientific issues.

New R&D Culture May be Wave of the Future
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has a new, tougher development culture which reflects a broad feeling in the industry that the R&D bureaucracy was consuming billions of dollars more even as new drug approvals dropped to a paltry level.  Their  new system is designed to spark greater creativity by scrapping the monolithic culture that existed previously and making the drug development process more personalized and its scientists more accountable.

Work Life Satisfaction

Supermoms Take Care
New research shows that management of one's expectations is key to wellbeing.  Moms who hold to a strict definition of what it means to maintain work-life balance tend to be more at risk for depression and self-blame.  Perhaps work-life balance ought to be viewed as something very personally defined, something that is rooted in an honest assessment of present commitments and capacities.

Get A Life - Unplug from Technology

Setting rules on how and when to respond to e-mails, texts and instant messages is important to keep life in balance. Also, informing your co-workers of the hours you will be plugged in is important to create boundaries and keep your personal life separate.
