Where the Jobs Are

Types of People You'll Find at Meetings
Meetings can sometimes be intolerable thanks to people like the Clotpoll who asks the question that has just been answered or the Idea Assassin who sees a flaw in every suggestion.  Maybe you've encountered the Literalist who reads aloud every word on his/her PowerPoint slides.

Study Finds Women Take Just as Many Risks as Men Do
Researchers from Columbia University and the University of Amsterdam have challenged the traditional view that women take fewer risks than men do with a recent study that suggests women simply take different types of risks. "Men are willing to take more risks in finances. But women take more social risks -- a category that includes things like starting a new career in your mid-30s or speaking your mind about an unpopular issue in a meeting at work," said study co-author Bernd Figner.

Researchers to Create "Virtual Patients"
A Max Planck Society-led Information Technology Future of Medicine consortium will use about $2.1 million in European Union funds to create "virtual patients" based on individual genetic and physiological information. Researchers will create "models of human pathways, tissues, diseases and ultimately of the human as a whole," said Hans Westerhoff, a professor at the University of Manchester, one of 25 ITFOM partners. Ultimately, patients could see their own health model, and doctors would have a better system for making treatment decisions, Westerhoff said.

There Is a Science to Being Disgusted
Women have been made into objects of disgust a lot throughout history. Disgust can be a very powerful rhetorical tool to discredit, undermine or demonize an opponent or a group of people with whom you don't agree. A new book by Daniel Kelly, an assistant professor of philosophy at Purdue University, "Yuck!: The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust," explains that disgust is an emotion so it's not purely cognitive or psychological.

Apps for Makeup are Realistic, Promising but Limited
ModiFace's new applications that allow users to test makeup options and then find the sites that sell them offer a realistic interface but are limited in the number of products they link to, writes Los Angeles Times blogger Deborah Netburn. "For now, most of our users are using the app as a game," said Nikkie Gotto, director of advanced projects for ModiFace.
