Glass Ceiling Still Intact for Female Federal Employees
A new U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) report titled Women in the Federal Government: Ambitions and Achievement shows that the government has made significant progress in utilizing women in the federal workplace but also points out the many improvements that must still be made.  For example, women remain scarce in the engineering and law enforcement occupations, where they account for 14 and 22 percent of workers in those professions, respectively.

Crowdsourcing Ideas for Teaching Math Writing Skills
Nearly a decade ago, many higher institutions decided it was important to teach students writing skills across all disciplines leaving professors to answer the question of how to integrate writing into an already full syllabus.  No longer segregated to English Departments, writing skills must be taught in  mathematics courses, so a website called the Educational Collaboration Space is being developed to allow faculty to crowdsource ideas and develop consensus about what works.

Scientist Explores Extended Longevity
Aubrey de Grey belief that a range of "maintenance" treatments--ranging from stem cell therapies to gene therapy, immune stimulation and other new technologies--will allow today's newborns to live 150 years.  His work is based on the wear and tear of molecular and cellular damage over the years. By preventing the damage, he expects to greatly increase the average life span. In some species specific enzymes do the work of cellular cleaning and de Grey believes that similar gene therapies can be developed for humans.

Five Percent of Patients Represent Half of Medical Spending
The National Institute for Health Care Management released its report "Understanding U.S. Health Care Spending" which shows that just five percent of patients account for half of medical spending.  The report highlights the knowledge that heath care spending has been "on a relentless upward path."
