Does a Bad Economy Equal More Female Computer Scientists? There has been a recent increase in female enrolment in computer science courses, which have typically been male dominated. This is quite possibly because computer science careers currently offer greater job security compared to other careers - a key attraction in a bad economy. Whether or not this feminine trend will continue remains to be seen, but we are hopeful that computer science is becoming a little more gender neutral... and a lot more glamorous!
Planning for Retirement Retirement planning is not something that is taught in school, and it can be confusing seeking out the information you need on your own. Here, two articles point you in the right direction. From deciding when and how one wants to retire, to helping with the financial planning, these articles cover both general retirement information and advice geared specifically to the retirement needs of women.
Men Better at Maximizing Online Networks, LinkedIn Data Show Men are savvier online professional networkers, according to a study by LinkedIn that also showed women in male-dominated fields such as ranching and tobacco are bigger networkers than their male counterparts are. "The minority sex has to network harder than the dominant sex to break into those industries," suggested LinkedIn. Experts here give tips on becoming a more savvy networker and cast some doubt on the LinkedIn figures.

Council Issues Report on Successful K-12 STEM Education A report issued by the National Research Council outlines ways to improve K-12 STEM education and calls on policymakers to raise science education to the same level of importance as math and reading. The report offers five proposals to help schools based on three types of specialty schools.

Global Need for Women Science Teachers According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Institute for Statistics, 96 countries will need a total of at least 1.9 million more teachers by 2015 than they did in 2007. Physicist Minella Clutario is hoping that the science teachers hired will include more women.

iPhone App For Monitoring Parkinson's Disease Researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) have developed an iPhone application to measure the severity of tremors experienced by persons with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions. The app could appear in the Apple App Store later this year and will allow more frequent patient monitoring without costly visits to medical facilities.

Tau Day Heats Up Pi Controversy Did you celebrate Pi Day on March 14th (3/14)? How about Tau Day on June 28th (6/28)? If so, you may be caught in a culture war between pi traditionalist and the growing number of tau supporters who believe that using tau makes more sense. Tau proponents believe tau is a more convenient formula that makes calculations easier and want to replace the use of pi with tau. Everyone from mathematicians to musicians are weighing on this debate that could someday rule most elementary math textbooks outdated.

The CBL Program has made grants since 1989 to promote women's study and teaching of science, mathematics and engineering. Focused on institutional grants for professorships, graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships, the program has become a significant source of private support for women's advancement in the STEM disciplines. The program director reports to the president, and is responsible for managing all steps of the grant-making process from initial inquiry through evaluation. Application deadline is August 5, 2011.
Elsevier Foundation Calls for 2011 New Scholars Proposals
The Elsevier Foundation is seeking new grant proposals for the 2011 New Scholars program which targets the attrition of talented women scientists in the academic pipeline. The Elsevier Foundation New Scholars program aims to support women scholars during the early stages of their demanding careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The deadline for New Scholars proposals is September 1, 2011.
International Science & Engineering Visualization Challege
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science invite you to participate in this year's Challenge. The competition recognizes scientists, engineers, visualization specialists and artists who produce innovative work in visual communication. Winning entries will be published in Science and Science Online, and will be displayed on the NSF website. Entry deadline is September 30, 2011. Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity in Complex Systems Research James S. McDonnell Foundation two-year grants of $200,000 will be awarded to students in the final stages of completing a Ph.D. degree in complex systems research. The deadline is July 15, 2011. UNM Mentoring Institute Call for Abstracts Abstracts that address the transformational potential that learning across disciplines holds for mentoring are encouraged. Proposals may be experiential in nature or reports of research. The deadline is July 15, 2011. 2011 AAAS Mentor Awards The two categories of the AAAS Mentor Awards, the Lifetime Mentor Award and the Mentor Award, honor individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the science and engineering Ph.D. workforce. These groups include: women of all racial or ethnic groups; African American, Native American, and Hispanic men; and people with disabilities. All nominations are due by July 31, 2011.
