Greetings!

We're excited to see so many chapters planning programing in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of AWIS:
  • Chapters in the Midwest will host a summer meetup on Saturday, August, 20, 2011.
  • Northern California chapters are gathering for a picnic on Sunday, August 21, 2011.
  • AWIS Philadelphia and Central New Jersey are organizing a two-day conference for October 20-21, 2011.

Education

Math Anxiety Starts in Youth
Anxiety about mathematics is more than just a dislike of math, and dyscalculia has profound effects on lifetime education.  Math anxiety uses up brainpower needed to solve the problem leaving the student anxious and the math problem unresolved.  Parents and teachers who convey their own negative feelings about math to their children or students, especially girls, risk passing along this anxiety.

Despite Budget Cuts, Performance Improved in Bio Course
An introductory course at a university where recent budget cuts doubled class size, cut lab times, and reduced the number of TAs, saw increased overall student performance.  The improvement was especially remarkable among educationally disadvantaged students.  The authors attribute the success to instructors who guide learning rather than lecture and who structure courses so that students are more likely to come to class prepared.

Active learning more beneficial than lecture

Careers

Use Summer to Your Career Advantage
Despite relaxed dress policies and other summertime accommodations, career experts advise against slacking during the summer months.  According to author Andrew Rosen, " it's actually the perfect time to up your game and advance your career."   So catch up on professional reading, organize your space, and take a career inventory.

Jobs Scarce for Baby-Boomers
The jobless rate for persons over 55 has doubled since the recession began.  More than 2 million baby boomers that once had white-collar jobs are now unemployed and having difficulty seeking work.  According to the federal government, these individuals are typically out of work 7 weeks longer than their younger colleagues.

Nothing Beats A Cup of Coffee in the Networking Game
Job seekers are landing positions and valuable contacts through social media such as Twitter and LinkedIn, but experts said not to rely excessively on them. "I don't think anything beats the face-to-face: spending time talking with people, meeting for coffee, learning about what they're working on, learning about how your skills can help their company," said Kelley Pecis, an executive recruiter.

Science and Health

Open Source Science
Taking a page from the techie playbook, scientists are collaborating online with amateurs and colleagues from other disciplines to seek innovative solutions.  The movement in research known as "open science" values the pace and transparency of online collaboration and attempts to revolutionize the way research is performed by making it more public.   Harnessing the power of the web to connect people and collect information, open science allows researchers to lay claim to an idea by sharing their work online instantly as opposed to the months-long process of journal publication.

Women Outpacing Men as Early Adopters of Social Technology
Tech gurus and users are often depicted as men, but women are quickly becoming the larger share of users of technology centered around staying connected and being social.  Director of the Georgetown University Children's Digital Media Center, Sandra Calvert, suggests that female adoption of these technologies could lead to more female computer programmers and tech-minded thinkers.
Work Life Satisfaction

Swedish Geographer Finds Long Commutes Lead to Higher Divorce Rates
Long commutes can help people build their careers, but they come with significant social costs, suggests research by Erika Sandow, a social geographer at Umeå University in Sweden. Couples in such arrangements experience a 40% greater likelihood of divorce, and the non-commuting partners often take a hit on their own earnings.

Leave Work on Time
Tired of the last minute scramble out the office or lab door every day?  Implement an exit strategy to help you leave the office on time.
