Doctoral Degrees in the US at a Record High
A recent study by the National Science Foundation has reported that the number of research doctorate degrees granted by American Institutions was a record 49,562 students in the year 2008-09.  While the number of male candidates earning doctoral degrees dipped slightly, there was an almost 5% increase in those earned by women in 2009 compared with in 2008.

PISA Report Shows U.S. Progress to Average

The 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) report for science released last week shows U.S. students have moved up in the PISA rankings, but still trail behind many nations in science literacy. PISA is an international assessment coordinated by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that compares the performance of 15-year-old students in reading, math, and science to their peers internationally.

Public Views on Higher Education

A new AP-Stanford University poll shows that the public believes the economy gets a very large boost from better education but they are unwilling to pay more for it.  The poll also shows that people mostly blame students and their parents for poor college graduation rates.

Road Less Traveled Still Needs Roadmap
The path from PhD to Professor is not an easy one these days, so development of an individual development plan is a necessary in finding your career path.  An individual development plan allows scientists to do what they are good at; investigate.  Scientists thinking of nontraditional paths need to utilize their investigational skills to define their interests, and explore job opportunities through research and networking.  This article describes some tips for making a development plan.

Eight Ways to Network Your Way to a Great New Job
It's that time of year again! Time for all those holiday get-togethers that come with the holiday season. If you're one of the millions of Americans looking for work, however, you're probably not in much of a celebrating mood. For you (and so many others), it's job search crunch time. If you're seeking employment or looking to take that next step in your career, this is the year you should focus less on the open bar and those trays of tempting hors d'oeuvres and more on maximizing holiday events to make connections that will land you that great new job.

NIH Announces Creation of New Center
The NIH is moving to set up a new research center that can act as a catalyst between the lab and the clinic, vaulting programs toward approval while setting up shop as a new deal-maker to the drug development industry.  In a major turning point, the Scientific Management Review board at the NIH voted to create the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.

Promise for Reversing Nerve Damage Caused by Multiple Sclerosis
In multiple sclerosis (MS), the immune system attacks myelin, the insulating layers that protect nerve fibers in the brain. Now researchers may have identified a way to regenerate myelin, and reverse the nerve damage and disability caused by MS. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, demonstrated how in mice, activating the retinoid acid receptor RXR-γ can be used to trigger the brain's own stem cells to regenerate new myelin.

Flavor Exposure in the Womb Impacts Infant's Sense of Smell
Researchers studying mice found that the pups' sense of smell is changed by what their mothers eat, teaching them to like the flavors in her diet.  The study, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, also demonstrated how a pregnant mother's diet induced structural changes in the olfactory glomeruli of the fetus' brain, which process smells.  Researchers fed one group of pregnant and nursing mice a bland diet and another a flavored diet.  At weaning age, the pups from mothers on the flavored diet had significantly larger olfactory glomeruli than those on the bland diet.

Peer Pressure Can Keep You Healthy
Hanging out with healthy friends could be the best way to keep fit.  Researchers surveyed 3610 Australian women, aged 18-46 years, to assess the extent to which healthy behavior among a person's contacts could influence their own lifestyle. The study, published in BioMed Central's International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, found that physical activity and healthy eating behavior were both strongly affected by social norms.  Those women who moved in healthier circles were in turn more likely to eat well and get more exercise, independent of social support.

Who needs work life balance?
The idea that work and life must always be balanced in complete harmony rarely exists in reality. Sometimes work and life have no balance, and sometimes they do, but that is ok.  This article contains some advice from Marcia Reynolds PsyD, a career coach, who teaches leadership classes.

What balance?

Busting the Myth About Women and Finances
A plethora of books and websites are aimed at helping women curb spending and be savvier with money, but studies show young women are generally better with finances than men. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that women and men ages 25 to 34 have similar spending levels, but women spend more on apparel and services, while men splurge on transportation. The amount of financial advice geared toward and consumed by women may reflect a lack of confidence, but women are becoming more optimistic about the economy and their prospects, experts say.

Are women really bad with money?
