Greetings!
AWIS member Teta Bahunde recently wrote, "It is a pleasure to have a platform for knowledge sharing and joining AWIS is an absolute must!"
She was referring to AWIS Members Only LinkedIn Group. This group was developed as a virtual chapter to assist in networking and connecting with other AWIS members on a national (and international) level.
Networking is important to your work-life satisfaction and AWIS has lots of resources to help you network effectively.
Have you tried the AWIS Membership Directory on our web site?
And, take a look at the article in today's Washington Wire that gives some helpful hints on building good networking skills.
Best regards,

Academic Stereotypes Are Meant To Be Ignored Long hours, no time for family, and changing locations are just a few of the stereotypes associated with an academic career. Women tend to fear these stereotypes since many will be impacted by family needs and time off. A career workshop discussing common stereotypes and fears amongst women in physics and astronomy was held. The workshop was created by Sarah Bridle, a cosmologist at the University College of London. She shared similar stereotypes and fears about a career in physics and astronomy early in her career, but she decided to ignore them and design her career path the way she needed it to be as opposed to the way it usually went.

Careers | Contributed by: Beth Rose Learn to Disagree With the Powers That Be Most days you probably look to your boss for guidance and see them as a role model. You trust the decisions that they have made with the help of your input. However, there may also be times when you fundamentally disagree with your boss. Confronting the person directly involved with ensuring your continued employment can be a daunting idea. Unfortunately, avoiding this confrontation or failing to make a convincing argument to your boss regarding the disputed decision can lead to more problems and hostility down the road.
Fight your battles
Faculty Job Satisfaction Lacking in Areas of Career Advancement The career path to a fully tenured professor can be long and arduous. Interestingly, despite this, when comparing job satisfaction, faculty members are much more likely to report overall job satisfaction than the general public (74.8% vs 45% respectively). This does not imply however, that there is no room for improvement. A Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) survey of over 22,000 full-time faculty members found that areas related to career advancement and professional development, especially among women, often received low ratings of satisfaction.

Tenure Track Positions on the Decline for Clinical MDs An analysis of the hiring practices at accredited medical schools over the past 25 years has revealed an interesting trend. The study, undertaken by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), found that while the number of faculty in academic medical centers has continued to expand, the number of clinical MDs hired on as tenure-track faculty has actually decreased nearly 30%. They also found that there is a discrepancy between the number of men and women in tenure-track position. This difference, approximately 8%, in which the number of men exceeds women, has not changed since 1984. Overall, this report concludes that, given the current trends, the overall number of tenure-track clinical MD positions will continue to decrease.

Ethanol Responses in Mutant Mice Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) have found that a mutation in the mouse genome - termed Lightweight (Lwt) - causes mice to voluntarily consume more ethanol. The allele Lightweight is a homolog of the C. Elegans gene unc-79. - and mutation of this gene in C. Elegans, has previously been demonstrated to result in a hypersensitivity to ethanol. The results of this study might provide insight into the genetic underpinnings of alcoholism in humans.

Consequences of Research Misconduct Scientific misconduct which is defined by the Office of Research and Integrity (ORS) , is defined as "fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research or in reporting research results." A recent case study published by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, used itself as a model to investigate further the financial ramifications of such misconduct. A single investigation, for all phases of the review processes, resulted in a total cost of $525,000. The authors propose that pro-active measures be taken to prevent scientific misconduct in the first place.

Study Identifies Heart Benefits in Dark Chocolate Women who ate one to three servings of high-quality dark chocolate per month reduced their risk of heart failure by 32% compared with women who didn't eat chocolate regularly, according to a Harvard study. However, the health benefit disappeared if women upped their intake, and the risk increased 23% for women with intake of three to six servings per week.

Work-Life Satisfaction | Want to Be Good at Networking? Think being confidently chatty is an important skill for effective networking? Think again. Many fears about networking are based on unfounded notions, writes Sandy Jones-Kaminski. Among them: The real secret is being able to listen and draw other people out. Jones-Kaminski also explains that networking is a learned skill that doesn't require natural charisma, only thoughtfulness, sincerity and a willingness to reciprocate.
