Perception Becomes Reality A team of psychology researchers at Miami University argues that women are less likely to pursue STEM careers when images of the "lone scientist" are assumed. In a paper published in the journal Psychological Science, researchers found that the more strongly a participant endorsed communal goals, the less likely he or she was to express interest in STEM careers. Women were more likely than men to endorse careers associated with "helping people".

How Scary is that Angry Face? Neuroscientists have long known that the amygdala, a key brain structure in the processing of fearful and emotional stimuli, is activated in response to fearful faces. However, as researchers from the UK point out, in a study published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, the degree of amygdala activation is varied across individuals. The variation, the authors argue, depends on the observer's own anxiety level and as a function of whether the angry faces are gazing at or away from the observer. The findings leads credence to the notion that the amygdala is not simply about processing fear, but about assessing threat level in various social situations.
