Cambridge, MA . . . (October 7, 2010) What do the following great chefs all share in common: Jody Adams (Rialto), Steven Brand (Upstairs on the Square), Raymond Ost (Sandrine's), Will Gilson (Garden at the Cellar), Mary Dumont (Harvest), Jorge Lopes (The Blue Room), and Barry Maiden (Hungry Mother)?
For several years running, each of them has been using the rich palette of autumn flavors--from root vegetables and all manner of squash to waterfowl and pork--to create delicious masterworks for Flavors of Fall, an event organized by BostonChefs.com every November to support a local community-based organization. This year, Keith Pooler (Bergamot), Peter McCarthy (EVOO), and Michael Scelfo (Russell House Tavern) will also be joining them on November 8 from 5:30 until 8:30PM at Regattabar in the Charles Hotel for the seventh edition of this popular annual event.
The beneficiary organization this year is Community Art Center, which has been providing economically-disadvantaged youth in Cambridge opportunities to develop themselves artistically, academically, and socially since 1932. Michael Scelfo, whose Russell House Tavern is participating in Flavors for the first time this year, is enthusiastic about the selection: "We have a special connection to the neighborhood, and we know that the Community Art Center does incredible work for Cambridge."
The $65 per person ticket price-which goes entirely to support the good work of the Community Art Center-covers all food and beverages, not to mention the hearty helping of jazz from the Rollo Tomasi Quartet. New this year will be a single malt scotch tasting from renowned spirit maker The Macallan. As in the past, Brooklyn Brewery will be offering a selection of its seasonal brews, San Pelligrino will pour sparkling water, and J.P. Licks will offer its locally-roasted coffee. Wine offerings will include Mumm Napa sparkling and Brancott from New Zealand. Also new this year: Tickets are available for purchase online by going to http://Shop.BostonChefs.com.
Eryn Johnson, Executive Director of the organization, considers the selection of the Community Art Center this year to be serendipitous. For one thing, the Art Center has embarked on a renovation of its facilities "that will make it possible to double the number of evening classes and community events, and triple the number of program hours offered." For another, Flavors of Fall this year coincides with the 14th Annual "Do It Your Damn Self!!" [DIYDS!!] National Youth Video and Film Festival which provides youth producers with a means to express themselves." Attendees at this year's Flavors of Fall will enjoy movie posters produced by the young film makers and be able to watch trailers of their cinematic art.
The chefs, who will be serving savory and sweet selections from their autumn menus, are equally excited about this year's celebration. "I get asked to participate in a lot of events every year," said Will Gilson of the Garden at the Cellar, "but I never turn down Flavors of Fall. The public loves it, the chefs get really excited about it, and it all goes to a great cause." Nick Zappia, owner of The Blue Room concurs: "We've been a part of Flavors since its inception. It's great to be a part of a larger community of like-minded people who hold up compassionate giving as a core value and business ethos."
Paul Schiavone, the CEO and Creative Director of BostonChefs.com sees real synergy between the work of BostonChefs.com and the mission of the Community Art Center. "As designers and producers of new and traditional media, we are heartened to know that the kids in our neighborhood are getting the opportunity to explore the visual arts." Indeed, reports Johnson, "by curating and planning DIYDS!!, Cambridge youth gain critical thinking and communication experience and practice marketable skills like web design, graphic design, and public speaking." "Who knows," mused Schiavone, "one of the Art Center's many alum may one day wind up founding his or her own web-based marketing enterprise."
Since the first Flavors event in 2004, BostonChefs.com, together with co-sponsors City Square Associates and The Charles Hotel, have raised over $60,000 for a wide range of Cambridge-based community organizations. Past beneficiaries have included Second Chances, CitySprouts, CycleKids, CLSACC, On the Rise, and Project Playgroup.
