Meet Our Families!

Charleston Habitat for Humanity is in the application process to repair several houses in West Ashley. We look forward to partnering with Devorah Nelson as one of our next projects.

 Devorah Nelson

Devorah NelsonDevorah is a Charleston native.  She lived downtown until 1984 when she moved to West Ashley.  She comes from a big family and is one of nine children.  She has three daughters of her own who are 30, 24, and 15 years old and a granddaughter who will be two years old in June.  In her free time Devorah enjoys reading her Bible, and staying active - she says she just cannot sit still.  She works two jobs, one at JC Penny and another at Duvall Catering, where she has worked for 15 years.  She started out at Duvall as the pastry chef and now works as the warehouse manager there.  On Sundays she attends Greater Zion AME in Mt. Pleasant.

Why Devorah?

Devorah is a committed home owner.  She bought her current home through an affordable homeownership progrom. While searching for a house, she saw this one and said, "That's my blessed house, my dream house right there!' Unfortunately, throughout the years, the house has fallen into disrepair and she has had a hard time finding the money to repair it herself.  After trying to go through the city for repairs, she found their repairs didn't alleviate all the issues she dealt with daily in her home. She was referred to Charleston Habitat for Humanity by Ms. Joann Cooksey who lives only 2 doors down and was a partner family just last year in our home repair program. We look forward to partnering with Devorah on this project.

What Needs to be Repaired?

Through our partnership, we plan to fix the leaky roof, which Devorah has been dealing with using duck tape and buckets to collect the water when it rains.  We also are looking to repair the sinking floor in the bathroom.  Her heating and air system needs to be replaced as does her leaking water heater which has been causing her water bills to skyrocket from the wasted water.  Finally we hope to repair the siding that is falling off and insulate the attic.
