Rehab Spotlight
In May 2009, volunteers from Zaxbys joined Charleston Habitat as it was just starting it's rehab program. They worked for a week repairing the home of Ms. Eula Thompson and her grandson Micah in West Ashley. Through the relationships formed during this project, Ms. Thompson was able to get a much-needed part-time job with Zaxbys.
Now, one year later, Ms. Thompson and the Zaxbys crew are building together again on another home repair project in West Ashley for Ms. Mae Conyers. Ms Thompson says " The work done to my home was such a blessing! I have to be part of doing this for someone else!" What a perfect picture of what volunteering and building community should look like! |

Bike-n-Build
A group of 31 determined cyclists started their cross-country journey on May 26 by joining forces with Charleston Habitat to help repair the roof for the Robinson Family at 832 Hitching Post Road. These volunteers raise money and bike across the country in the name of "affordable housing," stopping along the way to build and be a hands-on solution to these needs in our country. Click here to view their route tracker.

A special thanks to 'The BBQ Joint' located in North Charleston and 'The Pretzel Twister' in West Ashley at the Citadel Mall for supplying the food and beverages to this awesome group of of cylcing volunteers. |

Hudson Family
Charleston Habitat dedicated is 68th home on May 15, 2010! With grateful appreciation for First Scots Presbyterian Church sponsoring its 7th home, Stacy Hudson and her children Alex (14), Malika (6), and Amani(3) have now moved into their very own home! Click here to view the photo book Stacy created of the volunteers who helped build her dream.
This home was a milestone for Charleston Habitat as they strive toward more green and sustainable building. This was their third EarthCraft certified build, the installation of solar thermal panels provided by EcoBilt sets this home apart from most sustainability efforts in Charleston! Even Mayor Joe Riley came by to meet the Hudsons and this green and affordable home!

Habitat para la Humanidad
Charleston Habitat for Humanity sent its first group of volunteers on a Global Village trip to build with Habitat in La Ceiba, Honduras. Charleston Habitat tithes to Habitat in Honduras - for every home we build in Charleston, we send support to have a home built there as well. We recently tithed to have our 41st house built in La Ceiba.
This group of 15 volunteers had the time of their life on this trip! "It ranks up on the top of the list for best things I've ever done" says team member Rae Hunter.
With 2 travel days, 5 [very hot] build days, and 2 days for R&R, the team is already wanting to return next year! Habitat Honduras did a fantastic job at hosting our team! To read the team leader's blog and see more pictures, CLICK HERE.

JOPPA WAY BLOCK PARTY
Last Saturday, June 5, Charleston Habitat for Humanity hosted a block party in the new neighborhood where they will be building in the coming 2-3 years. With 23 lots, and three families already assigned, all we need now is some home sponsors and volunteers!
Above is Ms. Lavonia Dixon with her 3 children who will soon build their home in Joppa Way!
We had speakers, games, food, and lots of fun for everyone who came out!
Special thanks to our architect Brad Brown for providing the vision for what some of the future homes will look like!
Thanks to Jack's Cosmic Dogs and Home Team BBQ for all the delicious food! |
