We've previously written about Asia and its reflexology research and reflexology paths. And, we've written about the growth of the reflexology business in China: franchises, health risks for workers, Chinese-style reflexology business in the US). China Reflexology BusinessThere's plenty more to write about-like the business of reflexology in Asia today. (See below.) After all, there are 26,000 licensed reflexology businesses in Beijing. There are an estimated 5 million reflexologists in China with the government citing a shortage of 1 million. On the one hand, reflexology is ubiquitous-found everywhere-in Asia but on the other hand there have been bumps in the road for the business of reflexology-a sought-after service in Malaysia but a troubled economy prompted problems for those who had invested in the business. (See below.) Fish reflexology spas in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are still popular but with caveats for consumers. (See below.) |

Be Sure to Get the Right "Doctor Fish"!!!
A fish reflexology spa controversy has erupted in Asia. In addition to cleanliness concerns, there are reports of the wrong fish being utilized. Instead of the correct garra rufa fish, fake garra rufa are being employed such as chin chin fish which can bite hard enough to cause cuts. Reviewer Pink Elle advises "More reputable members (of Spa Association Singapore) use filtration systems and ultraviolet light to kill bacteria in the water and also check that their customers are clear of wounds." American Businessman's Encounters with Asian Reflexology
The basic techniques of Chinese reflexology is depicted in photos from the Beijing Tongren Hospital. Such a technique utilizes the knuckle of the index finger exerting a tremendous amount of pressure. The techniques are used throughout Asia.
They originated in China and were re-introduced
by Father Josef Eugster. When reflexologists gather, they compare callousing on knuckles to gauge experience. The authors compare it to dental work-without anesthesia-after experiencing a session in Tokyo. Note the description of Chinese reflexology in the following article.

Guinness World Record for Reflexology Participants
"Tourists participate in a mass foot reflexology session at the Taipei Arena July 1, 2008. The tourism bureau of Taiwan looked to break the Guinness World Record of 'Most people receiving reflexology/foot massage simultaneously' by challenging the current record with 2,000 participants on Tuesday undergoing 20 minutes of reflexology treatment together. The current record is 400 participants with treatment on both feet for at least five minutes."

China's Reflexology Business Model in Malaysia: Burst Bubble
Boom to burst bubble seems to be the story for the transplant of the Chinese reflexology business model to Malaysia. Reflexology remains popular and there is a shortage of reflexologists but the perception of reflexology services has been damaged thanks to a business model gone awry.
