Greetings!

You never know which skill from your reflexology skill set you'll be using during a session. Some days, it seems that listening skills are all important for that client with a stressful day at the office or the senior wanting to stroll down memory lane. However, the ability to respond to stress cues of the feet always comes in handy it seems. Whether demonstrating skills to a potential client or using them to keep and convince an existing client, reading the feet for stress cues is a mainstay for the reflexologist. Also, it just makes reflexology work so much more interesting!!!

We were doing a demonstration at a health food store and Kevin was looking over the feet of the woman who had taken a seat for a reflexology sampler. He immediately said, I've seen these feet before. The woman was blown away. Yes, she replied, you worked on my feet once ten years ago. How did you know? You have an unusual neck reflex area that I recognized. I always meant to call you to tell you that my neck snapped into place just after I left your office, by the way.

In another example we were visiting our client / printer at home to discuss a printing matter. It was a dramatic moment when he greeted us at the door, grabbed hold of each of us and, quite literally, dragged us inside. As he told it, he, a former restaurant owner, had been cooking hors d'oerves for the company Christmas party and decided to sample a cocktail-sized meatball. The meatball had become lodged in his pyloric valve. Now, most people are not familiar with their pyloric valves and, if they are, it's of little concern. But, you see, Dick had recently undergone a stomach stapling operation to combat morbid obesity. The meatball could cause a staple to become displaced. We were all aware that, should this happen, he would bleed to death before an ambulance could arrive.

He sat down in his recliner and we both took a foot, suspecting that Kevin, working on the left foot where the stomach reflex area would be reflected, would find something first. When I say find something, I mean that we were both using the thumb walking technique to search through the stomach reflex area for a touch stress cue that would direct us to the part of the foot to which further technique should be applied. I had the lucky foot as I came to think of it. I found an unusual touch stress cue, a soft, definitely round shaped area to the inside of the right foot toward the solar plexus reflex area. (You know, it's been twenty-five years but I could still point it out on a foot.) After a few minutes of work, Dick excused himself, went to the bathroom and lost the meatball. He was fine.

Yes, you could say that reading the feet is entertaining and helpful as well as beneficial to the reflexologist's bottom line. The woman from the health food store became a client, never missing her weekly appointment with her mother and children becoming occasional clients as well. Dick, well, he was with us until he moved out of state.

Moreover, skills at reading the feet add interest to a reflexologist's practice as well as helping convince a client of the value of the service. The reflexologist can monitor the reflex area demonstrating change over a series of sessions. As an added benefit to the client, take pictures of the feet at the first session. You can show change as time passes. One example was a client who had worked as a cosmetologist for years. She had breathing problems due to inhaling the toxic chemicals of the profession. She and Kevin followed along over the weekly sessions, monitoring the appearance and size of the visual stress cue in the feet. Taking a photo at an early session helped serve as a reminder of the starting point.

Finally, stress cues can "explain" your client's feet. A reflexologist is always seeking to find the source of the client's stress so it can be relaxed and, this, create the results the client is seeking. Maybe the client has forgotten that childhood accident that is the basis of the current lower back problem. Maybe, they haven't brought up that major car crash. The stress cues in the feet can prompt a question from you that will elicit such information. An example is, Have you ever injured your lower back? One client responded with information about the accident where she had slid 100 feet after being thrown from a motorcycle. For another, it was a fall from her grandson's skate board.
The Reflexologist's Skill Set: Reading the Feet
The Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology
Add to your skill set. Reading the feet helps organization your thoughts and sell your reflexology abilities. Learn about these ideas through the color photos and step-by-step instructions included in Kunz and Kunz titles The Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology (Third Edition) and My Reflexologist Says Feet Don't Lie. The photos in the books can also serve as models for show clients. People are fascinated to compare and contrast their feet to those of others.  At a recent party,  they added interest to our reflexology demonstrations with the show-and-tell aspect of such pictures helping to convince an MD of reflexology's value.
The Reflexologist's Tool Box
So what are these tools that the reflexologist has on hand to demonstrate value to the client as the session continues? The tools were: Evidence-Based Reflexology for Reflexologists ($29.95), The Reflexologist's E-Books Collection ($50), The Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology (Third Edition) ($21.95). Total cost: just over a $100. *

Tip: If you look at these tools, you can consider first the cost-benefit ratio: how many sessions will it take to cover this investment? What is the overall benefit to your practice? Will it increase credibility? Help with client retention? Make the session flow more smoothly?

*All are electronically available for download.

A successful reflexologist will use all the tools they can to build a clientele. Being able to make an ineffective foot assessment is a very important part of what a reflexologist does. But it is not just reading the feet but it is also the ability to draw some inferences from what you find in those feet.

So what stress cues do you see from the photo accompanying the lead article? It looks like two different people.
Sincerely,
