Evidence-Based Reflexology for Reflexologists

Evidence-Based Reflexology for Health Professionals and Researchers

Greetings!

Catch 'em, keep 'em and convince 'em is the salesman's axiom for closing a sale. It provides a clue to help the reflexologists we hear from who wonder, Why they (clients) don't come back (after an initial session). In this second of a three-part series directed at starting and growing your reflexology business, we will discuss keeping a client once you have him or her sitting in the chair in your office.
Keeping Your Clients

The key to keeping a client is showing that something of value is being provided. In essence, the challenge is how do you show that reflexology is doing something, providing a reason for the client to come back for further sessions.

Research can help you out. Let the client know what research shows happens during a reflexology session: relaxation, improved circulation and pain relief. As your work is going on, relaxation takes place as the client's brain waves go to a more relaxed state, pulse rate drops and blood pressure drops. Blood circulation increases to the feet, brain, kidneys and intestines. Pain relief is a more subjective assessment based on individual's reports rather than machine measurement.

If you had machines that measure physiological responses sitting there in your office as researchers do, you could show the client what is happening. An EEG would demonstrate change in brain waves to a more relaxed state as 5 studies have. Pulse rate and blood pressure would be measured and show a drop. Circulation improvements would be demonstrated by Doppler sonogram and other measures. Influence on pain before and after the session could be measured by the client's response to a classic research method: immersion of the hand in ice water. (The client may want to take your word for this one.) Research shows those who receive a reflexology session beforehand better tolerate the resulting pain.

There's a simple way for the client to judge for himself or herself that such things have happened. You and your client can conduct your own study. It's a matter of comparing and contrasting one foot to the other, the one that has received reflexology work and the one that hasn't. After you've worked on one foot, draw the client's attention to the appearance of the two feet. Ask him or her to compare the worked on foot to the non-worked on foot. Is there a difference in color? (Yes, the one looks alive is our favorite response to this question.) Next ask the client to get up and take a few steps. Ask, Do the two feet feel differently?

You've got the sizzle going here. You've shown something has happened, that reflexology helps with relaxation, makes feet feel better and improves circulation.

Let the client know there's more going on inside the body that can't be seen with the naked eye without investing in all the equipment (EEG, Doppler sonogram, sphygmomanometer). (lol) Consider buying the brochure, Can Reflexology Help Me? Hand it to the client and let a read through speak for you, showing what research demonstrates reflexology provides in a single session.
