A recent BBC program has set off fireworks bringing into question the cultural bias of science, media fairness and the ability of reflexologists to defend themselves. This newsletter we look at those issues and propose an alternative program to the BBC's.

Clash of cultures In a Clash of Cultures

What research will be needed to take reflexology out of the category of pseudo-science in the West? The question gave us pause. For one thing, reporters usually ask if there is any research into reflexology. For another, our answer was that the future is here: there is sufficient research to explain reflexology in terms of science. Whether or not scientists will listen is the real issue.

Canons on Deck Was BBC Fair?

A recently broadcast BBC program touted its "scientific" look at reflexology and reflexologists around the world are crying foul. The British media and Internet skeptics had a field day with the view of reflexology presented by Professor Kathy Sykes. The BBC three-part mini-documentary series "Alternative Therapies" featured the Bristol University physicist taking a "scientific" look at reflexology, meditation and hypnotherapy. On March 24, 2008 it was the turn of reflexology to go under the microscope.

Reflexology: Programming for an In-Depth View
Clapboard Our Proposal for a Program

The reflexology segment of the "Alternative Therapies" series broadcast March 24, 2008 on BBC presented an uncomplimentary view of the subject. We have suggestions for programming that would take a more fair and factual look at reflexology. Certainly television programs aim to entertain and to present a visually interesting report. We've thought about that too.

Reflexology is being confronted because it has grown in popularity. As this was being written Prince Charles and his foundation were being attacked in the London Times for supporting reflexology and homeopathy.
