2008 has started out strong for me.  I completed my first half marathon (13.1 miles!!!), secured some exciting new contracts, and have planned a great vacation for later this year.  I'm psyched.  And, I can't stop thinking things like:  Where am I going this year?  What do I want to accomplish?  What are my goals?  What do I need to do to reach them? While this constant self-analysis causes me a certain sense of irritation and I'd like to relax a bit, it is also energizing. It provides direction, purpose, and momentum. Like it or not, the snowball is rolling and 2008 is underway.

As you think about the year before you, I challenge you to ask yourself, "What am I doing to build momentum for myself and my team?"

Your team looks to you to forge the path, to set the tone, to create the momentum.  This month, ask yourself and then ask your team these momentum-building questions:

  • What are our highest priorities for this year?
  • If we could accomplish just three things this year, what would be the most meaningful accomplishments?
  • When we get to December 31, 2008 and reflect back on our year, how will we have defined success?  What will we be most proud of?
These questions, and questions like these, allow you to begin a conversation that creates momentum.  Providing vision and an exciting possible future is what all great leaders do.  Have you created momentum yet this year?

Webinars

Join us for a repeat session of this popular online workshop where we'll explore why there is often a difference between what a manager expects and the employee delivers. Tools for developing clear expectations and then communicating those expectations to employees will be offered. In addition, a practical tool for involving employees in the expectation-setting process will be presented.

One of my favorite leadership-related books is Susan Scott's Fierce Conversations.  In this practical guide to having those tough conversations, Scott has provided me (and many of my clients) with the confidence to increase clarity and improve understanding in all of my relationshps.  By transforming everyday conversations into robust, passionate exchanges, you too can achieve a greater level of success "one conversation at a time."  If you haven't been introduced to this bestseller, put it on your "must read" list.  You won't regret it.

If you have a "must read"  tell me about it and I'll pass along your recommendation in a future e-tips.
