Summer Raffle

If you love the painting The Domes of Yosemite and dream of visiting the park, here is your chance! The 2012 Athenaeum Summer Raffle prize is a trip to Yosemite National Park. The prize features a two-night stay for two adults at Yosemite Lodge, an $800 stipend for airfare for two adults to San Francisco, and round-trip transportation by bus from San Francisco to the Park. The Athenaeum will pay up to $2,300 for the cost of the trip and airfare based on 2012 pricing. Winner is responsible for incremental costs based on selected travel date. Summer is Kindle Time

If you don't own a Kindle, summer is a great time to borrow one of the Athenaeum's and take it for a test drive. Our Kindles come with a variety of bestsellers and other works. Just ask at the Front Desk if you are interested in borrowing one.

If you own a Kindle, don't forget that you can borrow e-books via Listen Up! Vermont and Amazon. Books are loaned for a two week period and you'll get an email notifiying you shortly before your loan is going to expire.

First Interactive Book Group Features Weird Novel

The Athenaeum's first interactive book discussion is up and running. The ReplacementYoung adults (ages 12 and up) as well as adults can read a really “weird” novel (according to the author) this summer. We have copies of Brenna Yovanoff’s The Replacement available in the Childrens Library, and you can sign out a copy any time you want. Edward Scissorhands meets The Catcher in the Rye in this wildly imaginative and frighteningly beautiful horror novel about an unusual boy and his search for a place to belong.

Arts and Culture Series

Join us for a presentation and workshop by Rodney Reis on "Plein Air Painting - Materials of the Masters" on Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m.

The paintings of the great masters Rodney Reisutilized a variety of materials that were made by hand and composed of ingredients that were found from all parts of the globe. The development and composition of the best materials used by today's oil painters has been handed down for generations.

The discussion will include a demonstration of pigments, mediums, palette/canvas, techniques and the use of these materials as a whole.

Summer Reading Program

The 2012 Summer Reading Program for Kids is off to a great start! Magician Tom Joyce (pictured) Tom Joyceentertains young readers during our June 27th kick off event. The Summer Reading Program will feature programs twice a week during the month of July. Reading logs are available for children to track their Summer reading. Special Exhibit - Works by Larry Golden

The Athenaeum is hosting a special exhibit of the work of area artist Larry Golden to celebrate his significant contribution to the arts.� The exhibit will be displayed throughout the summer in the second floor gallery and all paintings on exhibit are for sale.
