Welcome to our new - & return - subscribers!
Early in the month we were delighted to get a phone call from Verity Leach in Halifax. She and her husband Chris Fyles are selling their home and wanted a website to go with their efforts. After turning up empty handed in the city, they decided to go further afield and hire LuckyDuck! It was a fun project. Read more in our lead story.
Another fine builder has joined the LuckyDuck family: Richard Lind of Everts Lind Enterprises. Be sure to check out his new website.
We also kept busy working on the South Shore Women in Business website update & re-launch - see more details below.

HALIFAX - This home features high ceilings, hardwood floors and spacious rooms. It has lots of daylight and a comfortable, attractive interior design. The owners are down-sizing their home, and have chosen to stay in the area . . . Visit their website!
The home owner Verity Leach went online and researched Halifax web designers, but wasn't impressed. That's when she and her husband, Chris Fyles called LuckyDuck. They're glad they did - click to read their testimonial!
It was a fun project - mostly done through email, plus a few phone calls. A collection of fine photos was supplied by Verity, as were all the details about the home.

LuckyDuck takes on SSWBA website |
| South Shore Women in Business |
SOUTH SHORE - I joined South Shore Women in Business (SSWBA) last year and recently took on updating and looking after their website.
Allan's capabilities made a huge difference to the site. With his server side scripting, the once cumbersome job of updating pages has been simplified in a marvelous way! What was 50 individual pages, one for each member's profile, is now one page that automatically generates the proper version.
The Meet our Members section in the top left hand corner used to have the same person on every page (boring). Now, each time a new page is accessed, a new member is automatically generated (fun!)
We made a few other tweaks, but those two were the most exciting. I know I'm not alone when I say "Thanks Allan, you did a great job!"

The South Shore Women in Business Association is co-sponsoring a business symposium with Bridgewater & Area Chamber of Commerce. April 5 in Bridgewater - a Women in Business Expo: Spring into Business. Don't miss this chance to showcase your business! Click SSWBA News to download a registration form - it's part of the lead story.

Autobiographical journey - A Long Trail Sheila Lewis previews two new paintings |
ROSE BAY - Sheila Lewis, an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, is a prolific 87 year old painter. She began working on her latest solo exhibit (for September 2 - October 15) late last Fall, but she's been thinking about it for a couple of years or more.
In A Long Trail, she's remembering a life-time of seasons and places in the UK, Europe, Cayman, New Zealand, the USA, The Rockies, Ontario and the Maritimes. The exhibit will be held at the Rossignol Cultural Centre, Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Earlier in the year, she'll launch a calendar featuring paintings from the show. Until September, Sheila will be posting two new Long Trail paintings a month on her website. We'll be sure to remind you in our e-news!

Lucky's March feature: Some gardening inspiration |
| Making the most of micro farming |
CLAM HARBOUR - Jude Major grows enough to feed herself and her business, Katie's Farm - Canada's first and only certified organic bakery of pet treats.
She does it on her "old-fashioned" mixed farm of a mere 2.5 acres - and even more remarkable, with seven raised beds, each modestly measuring about five by 30 feet.
She grows hardy standbys such as peas, lettuces and beans; as well as celery, herbs and garlic; sweet potatoes, tomatoes and hot peppers!

Lucky's March photo collection: Lunenburg Lines |
LUNENBURG - I had a half hour to fill-in last week down by the Lunenburg waterfront.
Although Bluenose II was still under wraps, there was lots to keep my inner photographer interested.

Lucky talks web design |
Hand coding - why bother?
When I was studying webdesign I was double lucky. First, I came across a wonderful website that applauded the benefits of coding-by-hand and the pitfalls of getting software to do the work.
Nonetheless, I invested in Dreamweaver software - and its reputation as being the best. Then came along my second bit of luck - after hearing my grumbles and frustrations at Dreamweaver's unreliable behaviour, Allan suggested I learn to code by hand. Seeing as he had nearly a decade of doing that very thing, he was the guy to teach me.
I can't help myself, I'm proud we ditched Dreamweaver - before we even did our first site. Over the years, we've seen some "ughly" software generated code. How can I explain the difference . . . would you rather have a home-baked-from-scratch chocolate-to-die-for-cake? Or would you rather have a twinky? Something off the rack or a tailor made suit? Store-bought furniture or something hand-crafted? I think you get the idea!
"Some WYSIWYG editors put in their own code that can be proprietary (particularly notorious is MS FrontPage)," cautions Ben Hunt. "You may not understand where this code is coming from, how it works, and how to fix it if it goes wrong."
Ben's convinced - and so are we - it's faster to create tidy hand-coding than it is to use a WYSIWYG editor - if you take time to learn the skill of touch-typing.
Another thing - when it's time to update the page, working with properly formatted, hand-code will be a breeze compared to a sloppy, software generated product. It's similar to the difference between reading a solid mass of text, or one that has punctuation and spaces between words, paragraphs and headlines.
And lastly, search engine robots appreciate well coded pages. Of course we're not in the business of pleasing 'bots, but it sure doesn't hurt any!
Remember last month's Domain Registry of Canada - high priced scammers?
They're a busy bunch - we had another couple of calls from clients about them. Before saying "Yes" to re-newing your domain name, ask your webdesigner if you should or Google the company name and find out if they're legit. |
