lucky's on purple New Lucky website! Harmony Bazaar: July 27 - 29
Harmony Bazaar guitarLOCKEPORT - Harmony Bazaar, Nova Scotia's only Women's Music Festival, is home to three days of music and songs that speak to the experiences and narratives of women.

Halifax's Jill Barber is one of Canada's most distinctive young voices. This past spring, she won two 2007 East Coast Music Awards (and was nominated for two more) in honour of her long-anticipated sophomore album, For All Time. As Harmony Bazaar's Saturday night headliner, Jill will close the evening's show with a memorable concert.

Invitations are open to those who wish to participate in a Saturday gospel workshop with Pat Watson of Bridgewater.  She has quite the loyal following and recently toured Nova Scotia as a member of the South Shore Women in Jazz trio.

This year's marketplace will feature many women artisans and artists  as well as local food vendors. All quilt enthusiasts listen-up! In conjunction with Harmony Bazaar, the display  100 Years of Quilts, July 23 - 29, will include Friday & Saturday quilting workshops  with Anna Davison of Mahone Bay and Laurie Swim of Lunenburg.

Cindy Embree of Harmony Bazaar Festival Committee notes: "Creating a website with Jodie Turner at Lucky Duck gave a great boost to Harmony Bazaar Festival . . ."

A guided walk through the woods
Rosmarie BradleyCHESTER  - American summer residents, the Grove family, donated Big Fish Island and their share of Clay Island to the Municipality District of Chester.  After purchasing the remaining block of Clay Island, the municipality placed conservation easements on both.

Rosmarie Bradley of Helping Nature Heal was called. An expert in Restoration Ecology, she was the perfect person to lead a guided walk through the woods of Clay Island.

"It's an Old Acadian Forest," she explains. "There are trees pushing 100 years of age. We need to be stewards of the land. We've been given such a gift, we need to protect it, honour it. We need to set up infrastructure - there are groves of ferns, mushrooms. We need to respect nature."

    Simple re-design tips
A web site, to be effective, is home to change - in fact - welcomes the opportunity to say something, and do something, differently. Re-designing a web site can be as big - or even bigger - a job as starting from scratch.

But web site owners can make a real difference with simple changes. Each month, we're going to make a few suggestions based on actual sites we've seen.

White space is our friend!

If you want to scare off a new visitor faster than you can say "Come back!" use really long paragraphs with lines and lines of text - and hold back on the spacing - there's nothing like a screen of text to get that move-on finger twitching!

Break up the page with small paragraphs, mini headlines, bullets . . . hmmmm, why do I have the feeling I'm repeating myself?

Say "no thank-you" to ALL CAPS!

All that shouting is Most unfriendly! Did you know it's more difficult to read all caps than a mixture of upper and lower case letters?

To compound the problem - reading on a monitor is tiring. With these points in mind, I think you'll agree mixing it up is best.

Under Construction - bad idea!

As people with websites, we need to make every effort not to disappoint the visitor. After making the effort to land on a website, let's not greet him or her with an "Under Construction" sign.

That's all it takes to lose an online visitor - and there's a real possibility he or she won't be back.

Better to be patient. When you've something to show, then go live.

Own your name!

Scary the number of people we come across who don't know if they own their domain name and what the password is to access their control panel ... Although we look after all control-panel type issues for our clients, we make sure they own their domain name and they know all relevant passwords.

I recently had a phone call from a woman whose webdesigner had suddenly moved with no-forwarding address. (oh-oh) She didn't have the answers to these basic questions so she couldn't update her site.

Easy website promotion!

We see this a lot as well. People have a website and they have email. Their email address is, for example, entrepreneur@yahoo.com - Yahoo thanks them for the promotion of their services each time they send an e-mail.

Ask your webdesigner to set you up with an email
entrepreneur@yourwebsite.com ... and to set up an automatic forwarding of all your website email to your home email. This is a five-minute process ... Don't forget to update your business cards, letterhead, etc.!

Still not sure?

Contact us with a question and we'll respond right away - we may feature your question in next month's e-news!

greyhound looks out window We're pleased to launch a new Lucky column in our Greyhound Rory's memory.  Each month for the next 12, we will highlight GPAC.

Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to placing retired greyhounds into loving homes across Atlantic Canada. As a volunteer driven organization, we are always in need of people with a love for animals to do any of the following things:

  • Helping out with Hound Days (when a load of dogs is received from the U.S.)

  • Walking and playing with the dogs at the kennels

  • Helping out with some of the kennel chores

  • Participating in fund raising and awareness events such as Meet & Greets, Parades, Dog Carnivals, Auctions and Expos.

  • Becoming a member at large on the Board of Directors

  • Fostering dogs to prepare them for home living before they go into their "forever homes"

If you are interested in a great volunteer experience, please contact us at (902) 889-2214 or visit us online at Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada.
