Janet Mason marine artist does Lunenburg artworks in oil, acrylic and watercolors. Since 1976, she's dedicated herself to painting Nova Scotia.

Her Nova Scotia roots run deeply in Lunenburg and nearby Stonehurst - she paints their rugged coastlines, tranquil inlets and beautiful flora.

Janet's had several solo exhibitions and has been part of many group shows during her career. Her work can be found in private collections throughout Canada, United States and Europe.

She greatly appreciates her loyal following. Near the front of the line is Mike Zinck:

"I feel very privileged to own several paintings by Janet Mason. I have followed her work from her earlier days of painting and admire her style as an artist . . . Her paintings reflect the heart of a wonderful artist."

Lucky's photo corner: the Hong Kong Connection
3 women chat
It's been a pleasure designing and maintaining the Iyengar Yoga Hong Kong Centre website!

The school is the yoga-hungry city's first and only BKS Iyengar accredited facility. It was founded and is directed by Linda Shevloff, a highly educated, certified teacher.

Teachers and teachers-in-training, maintain a current, vital connection with the Master. Students benefit as they learn from some of the world's finest Iyengar yoga teachers.

The photos on her website, including the three women chatting before class, are done by Ulana Switucha.

The quality of the school And the photos make it a pleasure to be its web builder and maintainer.

The icing on this cake is that the three of us women are all from Canada. Thousands of miles apart, yet linked and linkable through the world wide web.

I think you'd enjoy visiting the yoga site - if you've been there before, there's lots that's new. It's colour scheme alone is unusual for the web. While you're at it, check out Ulana's website - the images may take some time to load, but it's worth the wait.

Beware of that hard drive - it can let you down hard
Back up Back up Back up Back up Back up Back up !
river bridge curves
The other morning while reading e-mail my whole world came to a stop. That is, my entire computer world. Very scary.

Turns out my hard drive died. Happily ? very happily ? Allan backs up my stuff regularly and I only lost part of a day's work.

While delivering my machine to Intelligent Choice Computers in Bridgewater, Allan had a quick chat with Michael Greek, their service manager. Later that week, I asked Mike to tell our subscribers more ? and he does:

?Besides viruses & spyware," Mike writes, " . . . the hard drive is the weakest point in a system. I have seen new ones bad right out of the box & some fail a little bit down the road (like yours).

?There are a couple recommendations to avoiding disasters with your data. The first one is to do backups, backups, backups. Even if it just means burning photos, documents etc. to CDs or DVDs. If you are going to back your pictures up on CD, make 2 copies & keep one off site.

"You don't need to backup your programs - if there is a catastrophic failure you can reinstall them from the manufacturer's CDs you (hopefully) have somewhere handy.

"CDs & DVDs are fairly durable & can store data for a long time. Rewritable CDs & DVDs (CDRW & DVDRW) are good for regular backups where your data is changing on a regular basis & you can erase & reuse the CD or DVD. They are not recommended for long term storage. These disks are meant for storage of up to 5 years before needing to be re burnt, after which they are good for up to another 5 years.

"Many newer motherboards have built-in RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) The most popular is RAID 1, also called mirroring. Two identical hard drives write the same data to both at the same time in real time. If one of the drives fail, the other is ready to go. Some people think if they mistakenly delete something, they can retrieve it off of the 2nd drive. Sorry, but no.

"The biggest problems with backups is no one does them! Especially home users. Most, as in 70%, don't know how to do a backup of their data, period.

"Some services can recover data off of bad hard drives, but they are not cheap. Hard drives are completely sealed units, no dust can get in or out of them. We have a customer who had two hard drive failures over 10 years. It cost her $2,000 the first time to get all her data back. The second time it was $1,500 because there was less data to recover. (I guess she didn't learn the first time!!)

We had a customer whose hard drive crashed. He was running his business on it for the 3 or 4 years & he lost it all, no backups."

Thanks Mike - you'll be glad to hear Allan is backing up every 24 hours!

Shriners say "Thanks!"
But really, the pleasure was all mine!
shriner & jodie I was a delighted youngster when I first saw the Shriners doing intricate, fast formations on their tiny motorcycles during a Grey Cup Parade.

Today, my connection with the Shriners is as an adult, but it still brings me much happiness.

My friends Sharon and Harry Rhyno have been involved with the organization for quite some time. Since '04, I've considered it a privilege to turn out press releases and publicity photos for a remarkable - and popular - parade of fundraising variety shows organized by Sharon.

They've raised thousands of dollars from admission, auctions and draws and it all goes straight to a Shriner hospital. There are 22 such state-of-the-art facilities where patients under 18 receive orthopedic, burn and spinal cord injury care ? all without charge regardless of race, religion or relationship to a Shriner.

Last week, I was honoured to be welcomed into the Shriners 100 Million Dollar Club. "Give $100 and feel like a million," explained Harry, Nova Scotia's South Shore Shriner Noble. Turns out $100 had been donated in my name in support of the "World's Greatest Philanthropy." That donation, earmarked for equipment, went directly to Montreal's Shriner Hospital for Children. And Harry was right, I did feel like a million!

The Shriners of North America has close to 500,000 members in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Panama. If you know of a child who might be helped by the organization, please call 1-800-361-7256.
