| News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center May 2012 |
|
Greetings!
"Cancer survivors can be a powerful lobby for change. We can show the human cost of past polluting practices. We can reimagine a future built on the principles of precautionary green chemistry and green engineering. But only if we don't confine ourselves to the present moment. Living each day as if it were your last is not all it's cracked up to be. In fact, discounting the future and ignoring the past is how we've contaminated the earth with toxic chemicals in the first place." - Sandra Steingraber, PhD
The Women's Cancer Resource Center invites you to join us for an evening with Sandra Steingraber, who will address "Fracking our Bodies: Cancer Prevention in an Age of Extreme Fossil Fuel Extraction."
 | |
Dr. Sandra Steingraber |
Steingraber will describe the link between fossil fuels -- their extraction, combustion and use as the raw materials for petrochemicals -- and cancer. And perhaps most importantly, she will demonstrate how cancer survivors can lead the way to green energy and green chemistry.
This free event will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 7-8:30 pm at La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley.
The event was funded by the generosity of the Ceres Foundation, Breast Cancer Fund, and Sandra Steingraber.
Registration is required.
With gratitude, Peggy
Peggy McGuire Executive Director
PS: There have been several purse-snatchings in our neighborhood during the past several weeks. These robberies occurred during daylight and no one has been physically hurt. Police reports have been filed.

We Love Our Volunteers
We were thrilled to celebrate our vibrant, generous and dedicated volunteer community at last Friday evening's recognition event! Over 40 volunteers gathered to celebrate the past year of accomplishments and to build connections across programs. Special guest, singer-songwriter Melanie DeMore, facilitated a powerful experience for volunteers and staff, featuring Gullah stick-pounding traditions, hand-clapping-foot-stomping rhythms, and the healing sounds of participants singing together. Thank you immensely to all volunteers for your contributions to the WCRC community! We love you!
