| News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center July 2010 |
Greetings!
Change is much on my mind these days. It surrounds me at work and at home as things that once held true shift, mutate or disappear. While it's not clear what will replace what was, I know that "more, better, different" isn't going to cut it. This time requires creating something new. Here at WCRC, I imagine it as a "leaderful" community where each of us carries the responsibility and accountability for sustaining this vital organization. As a "leaderful" community, our agenda, while profoundly challenging, offers many opportunities to engage creatively:
- Plan for the future: Our "Mission Transition Team" is assessing our mission, programs and resources against changes in the economy and the needs of our clients. Respond to our requests for feedback and let us know what you think;
- Serve on the Board: The Board of Directors continuously recruits new Board members who reflect the communities we serve and have the capacity to reach into communities of wealth. Is this your time to serve? Who do you recommend we contact?
- Donate: The Board, staff and supporters are working on strategies to replace substantial revenues provided by foundation grants with gifts from individuals so that our extensive services continue to be free of charge. Consider becoming a monthly donor - it's simple, easy and convenient. Collect pledges for the Swim a Mile. Hold a house party. Include WCRC in your estate planning;
- Volunteer your time: Staff members join forces with volunteers to empower women to deal with daunting issues of poverty, illness and grief through the embrace of community, information about community resources, personal advocacy and emotional support. We request a six month commitment and in return you receive the satisfaction of assuring that no woman must face cancer alone.
Where will you invest your leadership? With gratitude, Peggy

Exciting Benefits for WCRC
You Can Make a Difference by Swimming a Mile for Women With CancerJoin an estimated 600 men, women and children who will swim at the WCRC's Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer on October 2nd & 3rd, 2010, at Mills College. Register to swim!
Anybody can swim or water walk. We'll be cheering for you whether you go one lap or one mile (36 laps). All swimmers are asked to raise $350 in donations. Families are asked to raise $600 per family in donations. Any shortfall of the $350 per swimmer (or $600 per family) fundraising requirement will be auto-debited from the credit card account given at registration on or after the final fundraising deadline of Friday, November 19, 2010.
You can raise donations online (each swimmer will be able to access his or her personalized online donation form that sponsors can donate directly to) or in person, and we will give you the tools and support to reach your fundraising goal!
You bring: paddles, buoys, fins, kickboards, goggles, family, and friends.
We'll bring: cheering toys, food, beverages, great music, swim caps, and raffle prizes and provide an energized, fun, and supportive environment.
Support a Swimmer
 My name is Jacqueline and I am a swimmer and Swim a Mile volunteer. This will be my seventh year swimming and volunteering, and my third year serving on the Swim A Mile planning committee. I swim in memory and in honor of my family and friends who have been affected by cancer. I started swimming because I was looking for a volunteer opportunity and happened upon a brochure. I have been a swimmer all my life, and the Swim A Mile has allowed me to volunteer while doing something I love. The Swim has kept me active and in the pool all these years! Requesting donations from family and friends each year has become a way for me to keep in touch with them and it means so much to me when they donate. I want everyone I know to be a part of this event with me. I love the positive and energetic vibe of the event, and working with all of the other volunteers. The volunteers and planning committee members keeping me coming back each year! Thanks WCRC!
