| News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center June 2010 |
Greetings!
At this moment in time when the world economy has spun out of control -- or revealed how out of control it had become -- our community is challenged to adapt to a new way of life. It's much like the "new normal" for cancer survivors. We mourn what's lost and strive to accept and eventually embrace the changes that define our lives. The Women's Cancer Resource Center is feeling the impact of the "Great Recession." The women who turn to us for help are poorer and sicker and the resources we need to sustain our work are becoming scarcer. Many grants that sustained us in the past are no longer available as foundations have cut back their giving to compensate for assets lost in the market crash. We rely on your generosity to maintain stable quality programs led by qualified and committed staff. Please take a moment to read Linda Epley's story about the impact of WCRC (click here). I hope it inspires you to give. With gratitude, Peggy Peggy McGuire Executive Director Women's Cancer Resource Center |

New Staff at WCRC
We are delighted to announce that Pat Bregant has joined the staff of the Women's Cancer Resource Center as Director of Development. Pat served as the Director of Development for the San Francisco Organizing Project since 2005, where she was responsible for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual, corporate and foundation donors. She also produced its annual event, which has doubled in revenue since 2006. She coordinated all fundraising campaigns and communication strategies and participated in local, state and community organizing campaigns on behalf of education, economic development, affordable housing, access to health care and immigration reform. Before that she held Director of Development positions with San Francisco School Volunteers, Continuum and Health at Home. She has extensive volunteer management experience as well. Pat is the proud parent of a 12-year-old soccer-playing cellist, is a volunteer at two San Francisco Unified School District schools, and a solo and group performance musician. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Therapy at the University of Wisconsin. Welcome to WCRC, Pat! |

THE ART SPACE & RESTAURANTBocanova - http://bocanova.com/ Bocanova, the vibrant new Pan-American restaurant opening September 1 on Oakland's revitalized Jack London Square, draws on all these culinary riches, celebrating the ingredients and cuisines of Latin America and their intimate connection with their Old World counterparts, expressed through the culinary bounty of Northern California. THE ART GALLERY & CURATORChandra Cerrito Contemporary - http://www.chandracerrito.com/
Located in downtown Oakland's arts district, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary presents the work of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Paintings by Keira Kotler - Courtesy of Chandra Cerrito Contemporary Photographs by Ashley Teplin - Curated by Chandra Cerrito June 16 - September 15, 2010 Opening Reception: Thursday, June 17 5:30 - 7:30 pm @ Bocanova - 5 Webster Street, Oakland CA 94607-510.444.1233 THE ARTISTS
Keira Kotler
For over a decade, Keira Kotler has explored luminosity and the resonance of color through reductive paintings, photographs, prints and videos. Stemming from an interest in time and sensory perception, the work is an invitation to pause and turn inward. The small survey of paintings featured at Bocanova will include those from three bodies of work dating from 2004 to 2010. A graduate of UC Berkeley and Columbia University, Kotler received her MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. Her work has been exhibited nationally including at the Palm Springs Desert Museum, Palm Springs, CA; Charlotte Jackson Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM; Gen Art, San Francisco, CA; Gallery NAGA, Boston, MA; Di Rosa, Napa, CA and SITE Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM. She is represented by Chandra Cerrito Contemporary in Oakland, CA. When Kotler was 30, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, from which she has fully recovered. As a cancer survivor, Kotler has a deep appreciation of organizations like the Women's Cancer Resource Center of Oakland and the benefits they offer to those affected by this disease. She and Chandra Cerrito are pleased to be able to help raise awareness of and support for the Women's Cancer Resource Center through this exhibition at Bocanova. Ashley Teplin
Ashley Teplin stands astride in two worlds, with a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY and a fine art degree from UCLA. She explores the cohesiveness and abstractions found in her personal and daily examination of culinary, media and artistic realms. She breaks down visual elements with her painting and photography practice into palatable and jarring abstractions that showcase her aesthetic sensibilities. The photographs showcased at Bocanova were taken during her explorations in South America this past February and curated by Chandra Cerrito. In 2009, a friend and colleague was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and she is continuing to fight and win her battle with the disease. In the past 10 months, Ashley has raised over $5,000.00, running races for the cause and raising awareness and funds with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as the Lynne Cohen Foundation. 10% of the proceeds from every sale from the show will be donated to the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Stories of Grief and Loss Sought
Cheryl Jones, a volunteer therapist in the WCRC's Psychotherapy Program, is beginning work on a book about change and growth during the process of grief. She is currently conducting interviews for the book, entitled, Can Spring be Far Behind?: The Transformative Potential of Grief.
The book explores the profound life changes that sometimes come after experiencing a significant loss. Through the telling of griever's stories, the book gives comfort and permission to those who are learning how to re-form themselves through the grief process. Although we as human beings don't always learn from our experiences, the promise exists in each moment to go beyond our most difficult times and find their positive potential. By telling the intimate stories of human beings living with loss, this book inspires our awareness of grief's power to teach.
