About WCRC
News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center      May 2010
Greetings!

Peggy A couple of weeks ago the WCRC staff met to work on our goals and objectives for the coming fiscal year. It's a really left brain exercise to map out our ambitions against the revenues we predict we can raise and develop measures of the services we plan to provide.

Our ambitions always exceed projected revenues.

Gradually our conversation became more energized and animated as practicality was overtaken by the dreams we have for the center.

Despite the economic downturn, our programs are stable and we will continue to offer information and referral, care planning, support groups, practical in-home support, pro bono psychotherapy, targeted outreach, emotional support, cancer education and navigation by Community Health Advocates to Latinas and African American women, multicultural library, art gallery and cultural and healing arts programs.

We want to do more.

Please take a look at the wish list that emerged during our staff meeting and let me know if you can help make our dreams come true!
  • Secure satellite office space in Richmond, Fruitvale district in Oakland and Hayward to support outreach to African American women and Latinas
  • Engage individual(s) with information technology expertise to assist in ongoing technology assessment and planning
  • Secure financial support to certify the center as a green business
  • Launch an oral history/storytelling project to capture the life stories of women with cancer, especially in Spanish
  • Engage Spanish speaking psychotherapists in WCRC's pro bono psychotherapy program
  • Create a WCRC lifestyle cookbook - incorporating art and poetry/written word and messages about, nutrition, exercise, stress management and environment/greening
  • Funding for annual Sister to Sister Retreat
  • Offer a Caregivers Support Group for Spanish speaking people
  • Partner with local law firm for referrals
  • Renovate the kitchen and add a dishwasher and new refrigerator
  • Incorporate a labyrinth, picnic tables and garden sculptures

Environmental Info

Check out all of the fantastic resources on The Ecology Center's website. There is a great video about bottled water -- it is fun and informative while teaching us how to make a difference by not "buying" into the hype about this. They also have a great ecodirectory with local resources from asbestos to worms. Of course there is info about local farmers' markets and CSAs and everything in-between. They even have an EcoCalendar of great local and mostly free events.

Keep Grease out of your drain
Help keep our creeks and bay clean. Pour cooled cooking fats, oils and grease that will harden into a sturdy paper container and dispose of in your green recycling bin. For liquid vegetable oils drop off at Biofuel Oasis Cooperative 1441 Ashby Avenue, Berkeley or visit www.ebmud.com/cleanbay for other locations and more details.

Stories of Grief and Loss Sought
Cheryl Jones, a volunteer therapist in WCRC's Psychotherapy Program, is beginning work on a book about change and growth during the process of grief. She is currently conducting interviews for the book, entitled Can Spring be Far Behind?: The Transformative Potential of Grief

The book explores the profound life changes that sometimes come after experiencing a significant loss. Through the telling of griever's stories, the book gives comfort and permission to those who are learning how to re-form themselves through the grief process. Although we as human beings don't always learn from our experiences, the promise exists in each moment to go beyond our most difficult times and find their positive potential. By telling the intimate stories of human beings living with loss, this book inspires our awareness of grief's power to teach.

If you would like to share the story of your own loss, you can reach Cheryl at canspringbefar@sbcglobal.net. You can learn more about Cheryl's work at www.weatheringgrief.com.
