News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center      March 2010
Greetings!

Peggy in greenMy sincere thanks go to Barbara Brenner, Executive Director, Breast Cancer Action, Barbara Clifford, Program Manager, Cancer Detection Program/Every Woman Counts and Dr. Jeffrey A. Tice, internist and Asst. Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco for leading challenging and highly informative discussions at WCRC's February 11 Community Dialogue.

I also want to thank the members of our community who joined us, asked tough questions, challenged conventional wisdom and spoke on behalf of women who have no voice.

Barbara Brenner explained the science supporting the U.S. Prevention Services Task Force mammography screening recommendations released in November that advise against routine annual mammograms for women age 40 to 49, encourage screening every two years for post-menopausal women and no longer promote self breast exam. These recommendations are for women who are asymptomatic and who are not at elevated risk of breast cancer.

Some have interpreted the guidelines as a recommendation against mammography for women age 40 to 49. In fact, the task force actually intended to encourage women to talk with their providers and assess their personal risk factors in deciding whether to have a mammogram. The guidelines also don't say that no one under 50 should have screening mammograms and that screening mammograms should not be covered by insurance.

Barbara stressed that no detection method is perfect and that none prevent breast cancer.

Dr. Tice described studies that illustrate the delicate balance in weighing the benefits (reduction in death from breast cancer) against the harms (overdiagnosis, false positives and radiation exposure) of mammograms and self-breast exams.

WCRC staff members Dolores Moorehead and Alicia Riley voiced the frustration of many about the irrelevance of these recommendations to women who lack basic living resources - food, housing and access to medical care and don't know their family history and risk factors.

Barbara Clifford discussed the December closure of Every Woman Counts to women age 40 to 49 and to all new enrollees for women age 50 and older until July 2010. EWC provides breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women in California who do not qualify for Medi-Cal. Even more severe cuts are anticipated. Although these cuts result from lack of funding and are not related to the USPSTF guidelines, there is considerable concern that the guidelines will be used as cover for further cuts.

All speakers encouraged women to know their own bodies, be aware of their risk factors and family history and to advocate to their elected representatives for funding for breast cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment services.

WCRC's mission commits us to empower women to be active and informed consumers of health care services. We will keep you posted about ongoing education programs and Community Dialogues.

Spring Cleansing: How To & Is It Right for You?
Debra Sue Kelvin, L.Ac.
Tuesday, March 23, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
Internal cleansing has been valued in many cultures for centuries. We are exposed to numerous environmental toxins on a daily basis, most of which have been produced over the last 70 years. Given the proper nutrients and support, the human body can gently purify from this "body burden" of toxic substances. In Chinese Medicine, Spring is the season to harness the liver's expanding nature and detoxify.

Monday Hearts for Madalene - Book Party - Page Hodel
Saturday, March 27, 6:00 - 9:00 pm

Monday Hearts

When a person falls in love, the universe -- and everything in it -- come vividly alive. It happened to San Francisco artist Page Hodel when she found the love of her life, Madalene Rodriguez. She expressed her devotion in an unusual way: early every Monday morning, Page would create a heart for Madalene and leave it for her to discover somewhere near her front door. Tragically, Madalene died of ovarian cancer less than a year after she and Page met. But Page's love goes on, beautifully symbolized in the hearts she continues to create from a plenitude of objects.

Here are photographs of one hundred of Page's hearts for Madalene, fashioned from a magical, surprising diversity of materials: acorns and asparagus; berries, buttons, and bungee cord; cardboard, clothespins, corks, and candy corn. True love embraces the world, and Page's art is testimony to its enduring faith.

About the author: Page Hodel, a San Francisco Bay native, is an internationally-renowned DJ and nightclub promoter. As a DJ, she has been booked at major dance venues in San Francisco as well as clubs in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Paris.

Free Therapy Program Active Again

WCRC has reinstated the Free Therapy Program after an almost ten year hiatus. Begun by Kitsy Schoen in the early '90s, the program serves low income and under-insured women.

In 2009, the Free Therapy Program provide 12 free sessions of individual therapy to over 30 women. More than 15 licensed clinicians generously offered pro bono sessions which were structured on a weekly, bi weekly or monthly basis.

Following their last session, clinicians and the clients decide together whether to continue their work and under what financial arrangements. We are pleased to collaborate with the Women's Therapy Center and make referrals there as needed.

Connie HolmesConnie Holmes, EdD, directs the program, interviews prospective clients and makes referrals to participating psychotherapists. Connie has 23 years of experience working with people with cancer. She also serves as a consultant to clinicians.

Licensed psychotherapists interested in participating in this vital program may contact Connie Holmes at 510.898.0548.
Community Health Advocates

On Saturday, February 6th, a new group of women joined the ranks of trained Community Health Advocates (CHA) in the Sister to Sister Program. These six CHAs will partner with the veterans who have been working in the African American community since 2007, delivering the message about the importance of early cancer detection/screening, providing emotional and practical support to those facing cancer, and assisting individuals in navigating the medical system along with gaining access to community resources. We are especially pleased that three of the new graduates are from Richmond and will assist us in furthering our outreach efforts to that community.
