News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center      November 2009
Greetings!

Peggy turqoiseI spend a lot of my time at meetings and too many start with a dispirited rundown of furloughs, layoffs and cuts in cancer services. But when my turn comes, I proudly report that WCRC's largest fundraiser, the 2009 Swim a Mile for Women with Cancer, is breaking all event and fundraising records in our history!

Six hundred people registered to swim, up from 500 last year. It's clear we have met our goal to gross $285,000 and likely we will break $300,000 as pledges are fulfilled.  Please keep them coming!

I am hugely grateful to everyone who supports the event -- those who swim, water walk, cheer, raise money, give, volunteer, organize, prepare and serve food, set up and clean up, provide massages, play music and more.

Share the good news!

Please "think before you drink" out of disposable bottles or buy other plastic items (lighters, straws, cups, pens, shavers). Metal, glass or other more permanent items are usually much cheaper after a short amount of time. Only a tiny percentage of plastic gets reused or recycled and it takes a lot of petroleum and energy to make it.

WCRC News

DoloresOn Saturday, October 17th, MSOA hosted their 5th Annual Fundraiser in San Leandro at the Davis Street Family Resource Center.  While the event was a fundraiser for MSOA, it also focused on paying tribute to three ladies. Champions in the community, they have gone the extra mile to ensure that the needs of all women, not just African American women, are met through services, education and support. A beautiful crystal ribbon was given to Ms. Pamela Ratliff, Ms. Dolores Moorehead and Ms. Priscilla Banks in appreciation of their efforts.

MSOA opened its doors to the community almost five years ago in Alameda County and it is dedicated to providing free clinical breast examinations, personalized patient navigation, breast self-examination training, education and community outreach to raise awareness about breast health and screening. It is MSOA's desire to empower low income and underserved African American women with the knowledge and ability to create effective behavioral changes for a healthy lifestyle.

Congratulations Dolores!
