About WCRC
News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center February 2009
Greetings!

There are many ways you can support the Women's Cancer Resource Center - by volunteering, donating, attending events and telling your family and friends about the services we provide.

Possibly the most challenging and rewarding way of supporting the center is by serving on the Board of Directors.
Our board currently includes ten highly talented and dedicated women who represent the communities we serve, lead our fundraising efforts and offer an extensive array of professional expertise to the Center - financial, legal, human resources, marketing and communications and social services.
Our board continues to seek individuals to join in the work we do to advance the mission and financial well being of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. We especially need individuals with financial expertise and leadership ability for our Finance Committee.

If you are interested or have a friend or colleague who might be interested in board service, please review the job description and contact me for an introduction to the center and an interview.

VOLUNTEERING

Are you a good listener? Are you compassionate? If so, you might consider volunteering with WCRC.

It has been reported that some of the benefits of volunteering include developing better interpersonal skills, such as understanding people better, motivating others, and dealing with difficult situations. In addition, many people who volunteer have said that volunteering has helped them to develop better communication skills. Another benefit of volunteering is that you can increase your knowledge about the issue related to your volunteering which if you volunteered for WCRC, you would be sure to learn more about cancer and other issues related to women's health.

If you are interested in learning more about our volunteer opportunities, please visit our website and/or attend our next Volunteer Orientation.

Wheat and gluten allergies and intolerance are becoming increasingly prevalent in the US, and even those without an intolerance can benefit from reducing their intake of highly-hybridized, highly-processed, low-nutrition wheat flour products. Benefits to your health can include improved digestion, mood, sleep, skin and energy levels. Come learn the facts about wheat and gluten, their impacts on our health and how to avoid and replace them in your diet. The evening will include sampling a range of wheat and gluten-free goodies and a list of resources for a gluten-free lifestyle. The instructor, K. Ruby of the Institute of Urban Homesteading, has been living wheat-free for over 12 years and swears by it as an important contributing factor to her vibrant good health.

BEYOND WCRC

Lesbian Health Summit to Be Held in San Francisco:  March 6 - 8, 2009

"The mental, physical and spiritual health of lesbian, bisexual and queer women and transgender people are complex and under-discussed topics," said Diane Sabin, Executive Director of the Lesbian Health & Research Center and organizer of the Summit.  "At the Summit, we will broadly discuss how health plays into the lives, loves, and communities of LBT people around the country.  In addition, we are excited about hosting a section dedicated to controversies in our community - creating a safe public space for complicated engagement."

Confirmed panelists and workshop presenters include pioneers in lesbian and queer women's health: Rebecca Fox, Director of the National Coalition for LGBT Health; Dr. Sandra Hernández, Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco Foundation; Dr. Marjorie J. Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the Gay Men's Health Crisis; Sheila James Kuehl, the first openly gay California legislator and author of single payer health plan; and Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Director of Adolescent Health Initiatives, César E. Chavez Institute, San Francisco State University.

More information on the 2009 National Lesbian Health Summit - including registration - can be found here.

The Lesbian Health & Research Center (LHRC) is dedicated to improving the health of lesbians, bisexual women, transgender people, and our families. To achieve this goal, we create comprehensive programs of research, education and trainings, public events and community collaborations. For more information about LHRC, please visit their website.
