News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center January 2009
Greetings!

Peggy109Community at the Women's Cancer Resource Center takes many forms: you will find it in our support groups, cultural and healing arts programs, the outreach of our Community Health Advocates and Comadres, and even Board and staff meetings. In every aspect of our work, the spirit of community is expressed through some combination of music, art, story telling, food, laughter and passion for our cause.

On December 5, at WCRC's first annual Gifts of Healing Event at the center, more than 100 clients, volunteers and supporters joined us to celebrate the healing power of community, pay tribute our shared accomplishments and remember our loved ones.

Beautiful music was provided by Songbird - Amikaela Gaston, Trelawny Rose and Vincent Mellone.

Each guest left with a lovingly arranged bouquet of flowers donated by our good friends from VeriFlora and Elephant Pharmacy. These flowers represented the grace and beauty of the community we seek to build. Many thanks to Andrea Ford and Mara Padrick for creating each bouquet.

If you weren't able to join us for Gifts of Healing this year, we hope you can in 2009!

During the coming year, please let you family, friends and colleagues know about the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center and what our community has meant to you. Invite them to come by the center to attend an art show, join our monthly cooking club, take a writing class, and even Swim-a-Mile for Women with Cancer. And if you are asked, please let them know that there are many ways to lend support for the programs we offer: by giving generously, volunteering and considering Board service.

As ever, I thank you for your friendship and support of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Your generous hearts make it possible for us to sustain our mission and create the healing power of community.

Happy New Year!

Living Wheat and Gluten Free

Wheat and Gluten allergies and intolerance are becoming increasingly prevalent in the U.S. and even those without an intolerance can benefit from reducing their intake of highly-hybridized, highly-processed, low-nutrition wheat flour products. Benefits to your health can include improved digestion, mood, sleep, skin and energy levels. Come learn the facts about wheat and gluten, their impacts on our health and how to avoid and replace them in your diet. The evening will include sampling a range of wheat and gluten-free goodies and a list of resources for a gluten-free lifestyle. The instructor, K. Ruby of the Institute of Urban Homesteading, has been living wheat-free for over 12 years and swears by it as an important contributing factor to her vibrant good health.
