News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center November 2008
Greetings!

The Women's Cancer Resource Center staff and I would like to thank the 510 swimmers, countless donors and 180+ volunteers who Peggycontributed their time, energy and generosity to make this year's Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer a success.

Thanks to our dedicated swimmers and their fundraising prowess, the 2008 Swim A Mile has raised $250,000 and the donations continue to come in! And special thanks to the SAM Planning Committee members (Joanna Cuevas Ingram, Darlene deManincor, Jessica Drummer Ryan, Karen Ebert, Ellen Gierson, Kathy Marks, Dolores Moorehead, Juanita Kizor, Sarah Kurhajetz, Peggy McGuire, Jacqui Prisbylla, Margo Rivera-Weiss, Beth Thomsen, Ali Vogt) who met monthly, secured donations, planned logistics and provided invaluable suggestions to improve support to swimmers.

Thank you so much for making it possible for the Women's Cancer Resource Center to continue to provide free services to women with cancer.

The 2009 (and 14th Annual!) Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer will take place on October 3 & 4, 2009 at Mills College. Our website will be updated on June 1, 2009 and at that time online registration will be available. If you have any questions prior to that date, please contact Ali, the Swim Coordinator, at ali@wcrc.org or call 510/527-1918.

The EcoMetro Guide

The EcoMetro Guide is back! This is a coupon book and directory full of resources for living sustainably in the East Bay. With 300 valuable discounts on organic food and dining, local arts and culture, green home and garden, travel and recreation, and more, the EcoMetro Guide offers users opportunities to save hundreds of dollars while exploring our community and supporting local, sustainable businesses.  For example, there are $20 worth of coupons to Whole Foods alone, and others to Piedmont Grocery, Andronico's, Farmer Joe's, the Food Mill, Elephant Pharmacy and many other grocery stores, restaurants and other local sites that you probably already patronize. These books are great to buy for yourself and for gifts. They are a great deal for just $20 and best of all WCRC gets ½ of the proceeds.

Contact sarah@wcrc.org or 510-601-4040 x105 to pick up a EcoMetro Guide. We will have them available at WCRC for the next month or two.

IRA Rollover Passes

Congress has passed an important two-year extension of the IRA Rollover provision affecting charitable donations. Under the extension, individuals age 70 1/2 or older may transfer up to $100,000 per year from an IRA to a qualified charity tax free. These benefits will apply to all such gifts made during 2008, meaning there will be no gap between the time the provision initially lapsed at the end of 2007 and today. The renewed provision is set to expire at the end of 2009, although efforts continue to make it a permanent part of the tax code.

The distributions will be counted for purposes of the required minimum distributions ("RMDs") from an IRA but will not be included in calculating the individual taxpayer's limitation on charitable deductions in the year the donation was made.

There are specific procedures that must be followed to ensure no taxes are due on the IRA distribution. If you are interested in making a charitable contribution using your Traditional and/or Roth IRA assets, contact your financial advisor.

BEYOND WCRC

Welcome Leslie Ewing, new Executive Director at the Pacific Center, our neighbor at 2712 Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. Since 1973 the Pacific Center has been providing low-cost mental health services, peer support groups, and community to the East Bay LGBT community. They have a new e-bulletin and a print newsletter. Their website is www.pacificcenter.org.

The Pine Street Foundation is currently recruiting women for our study on the early detection of ovarian cancer and are seeking women with newly diagnosed or recurrent biopsy-confirmed ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer in the San Francisco Bay Area to breathe through a special tube prior to beginning treatment.

We also need women with endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome as well as healthy women to give breath samples.

Our primary goal is to analyze samples of exhaled breath for molecules that could identify ovarian cancer. We will collect samples of exhaled breath using a simple noninvasive device. Those exhaled breath samples will be analyzed using both a chemical method called GC/MS and a biological method (professionally trained dogs).

Our hope is that you might help get the word out about our new study to women who could be interested in participating.

More details can be found on our website.
