News From The Women's Cancer Resource Center June 2008
Greetings!

The Board of Directors of the Women's Cancer Resource Center has adopted our first Strategic Plan. Please click here to review the plan.

Our Strategic Plan commits us to:

1. Ensure the provision of and access to high quality, innovative and non-duplicative services;
2. Diversify funding sources to ensure the financial stability of WCRC;
3. Expand WCRC's visibility within underserved communities;
4. Strengthen relationships and strategic alliances with key community stakeholders;
5. Expand upon the Board's ability to govern WCRC effectively; and
6. Strengthen WCRC's infrastructure as it relates to systems, technology, facilities and risk management.

Many of you participated in the planning process by attending our Speak Out Speak Up Town Hall Meeting, responding to our online survey and being interviewed by Board members. You provided a tremendous amount of valuable information that informed discussions among Board and staff about priorities and the strategies to achieve them during the next three years.

Jackie Winnow's vision for WCRC has remained relevant for more than twenty years: an organization led and governed by a diverse women, providing information and emotional support to diverse women with any type of cancer, telling truth to power and mobilizing to eliminate the causes of cancer through skilled political advocacy.

Our future depends upon the kind of 360 degree thinking the Board, staff and community partners invested in developing our Strategic Plan. By this I mean:

-  Programs that grow out of rigorous assessment of the needs of the people we seek to serve,
-  Outreach in the communities where our clients live, work, worship and raise their children;
-  Linguistically and culturally competent staff and volunteers; and
- Collaborating and networking with other health care providers.
We believe that by staying grounded in our history and looking to the future through our Strategic Plan, we will live up to Jackie Winnow's ideals.

FUNDRAISING - Supporting WCRC's Work

Got Stuff?
Spring (or early summer) is a great time to get rid of all that stuff that is taking up space in your garage and closets. Most of that "stuff" can be donated to the Community Thrift Store and in turn they will make a donation to WCRC. Donate your items to Community Thrift Store and designate the Women's Cancer Resource Center as your beneficiary. Visit the Community Thrift Store at 625 Valencia Street, San Francisco or call them at 415.861.4910 for more information.

Did you know you can turn $0.05 into $383.00?
Thank you to everyone who sent in their tiny tickets. As a result of the tickets you sent in we received a check from BART for $383! As part of the Tiny Tickets Program through the East Bay Community Foundation, BART ticket holders may donate these tickets to local nonprofit organizations, including WCRC. Please continue to send in your "tiny tickets" to WCRC at 5741 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94609. If you're in the area you may also drop them off Mon - Friday 9 am - 5 pm.

BEYOND WCRC

Breast Cancer Support Organization Seeks Ambassadors

Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) recently did a survey on line and on paper about how women living with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer seek information, support and practical help. Some of the women who completed the survey on paper had different preferences and needs than those who took the survey on line. Because they want to ensure that all voices are heard, they are looking for more women to complete the survey in writing and return it by mail using a pre-paid envelope. Please help them by acting as an "ambassador" for LBBC and let women who might be eligible know that they can contact LBBC and request a copy of the survey. Women can email LBBC at mail@lbbc.org or call them at (610) 645-4567. All completed surveys must be postmarked on or before June 30, 2008.

DIETARY FAT
By Sandy Der

For the last 25-30 years there's been a low fat mantra. Fat and cholesterol (a fat alcohol) have been chastised as anti-health.

Good rule or bad rule?

OUR MISSION

To empower women with cancer to be active and informed consumers and survivors; to provide community for women with cancer and their supporters; to educate the general community about cancer; and to be actively involved in the struggle for a life-affirming, cancer-free society.
