Leadership Lakes Region Alumni One of the largest fund-raisers of the year for the local
Salvation Army homeless shelter, the Carey House, is the annual Turkey Plunge at
Weirs Beach. Begun four years ago, this "plunge" has hardy
souls running into the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee on November
21st. Each Plunger pays a fee or raises
sponsorships from non-plungers for the (dubious) pleasure of running into the
cool waters of the Big Lake !
This family-oriented event generates thousands of dollars to
offset the Salvation Army's cost of running the only homeless shelter in Belknap
County and numerous other community outreach programs to our neighbors in
need. Given the state of the current economy, we are seeing
more and more people coming to the Salvation Army for assistance.
The Turkey Plunge is a critical fundraising activity; now more than
ever.
This year we are soliciting Leadership Lakes Region alumni to
see if their respective companies or non-profit agencies would place a team of
from 5 to 50 members in the annual Turkey Plunge. This is a
highly visible community endeavor that doesn't take too much time but whose
results pay dividends throughout the Lakes Region for many months to
come.
I am requesting your support in requesting you promote the
Turkey Plunge with your employer/employees in hopes they will join us at the
5th Annual Turkey Plunge. If you, or any of your company colleagues
is interested, I would be most happy to meet with you at your place of business
to explain how the Plunge works. I can be reached at the
phone or e-mail shown below. In addition, Turkey Plunge
registration forms are available at any branch of the Meredith Village Savings
Bank or directly from the Salvation Army office in Laconia by calling
524-1834. Thank you very much for your consideration. This is
truly a worthy charitable event but lots of fun for the Plungers and spectators
also.
Sincerely,
Don Morrissey
Turkey Plunge Co-chairman
