NPLD Helps Kick off Year-Long Celebration of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites
Events expected at over 40 state public lands
| |
National Public Lands Day (NPLD) has partnered with the Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites (FGSP) to encourage Georgia residents to give back to their state's public lands. On September 29, 2012, NPLD will serve as the official kick-off of Your State Parks, a year-long celebration of service in state parks.

More than 40 FGSP chapters are expected to lead volunteer projects and family-friendly programs on NPLD. At Fort Yargo, mountain bikers will work on trails and at Unicoi State Park and Lodge, volunteers will clean up Smith Creek.
In addition, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has declared September 29 as a fee-free day at the majority of Georgia park units thanks to sponsorship from the FGSP. Free parking and admission is available to all Georgia residents and visitors. Participating locations can be found on GeorgiaStateParks.org, including Cloudland Canyon, Skidaway Island, Victoria Bryant, Dahlonega Gold Museum, Kolomoki Mounds and dozens of other destinations.
FGSP is a state-wide network of more than 50 chapters and 6,000 volunteers that work together to protect the natural and cultural resources of the state.

The end of September is an excellent time to visit Maine and experience the natural beauty of the Pine Tree State. This fall, visitors and residents will have the added opportunity of participating in recreational and educational programming in honor of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend and NPLD.
The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend (GMOW) is a three-day long event of family-friendly educational, recreational and volunteer activities. Occurring from September 28-30, the goal of GMOW is to get as many nonprofits, land trusts, businesses, guides, etc. to host introductory, low or no cost activities to encourage Mainers to learn about the outdoors. Events planned include guided hikes, paddles, nature walks, outdoor camp outs, family fun days and more!
The last weekend in September was chosen for the GMOW because it includes National Public Lands Day. GMOW activities are in development now. The first GMOW occurred over the spring and featured more than 90 events. Learn more about the GMOW or its organizing group, the Maine Outdoor Coalition, online.

Ohio College Students Can Park-It on NPLD
Students are invited to lead volunteer events at a state park
| |
During a graduate school internship, University of Dayton student Chase Jones thought of an idea that he couldn't quite shake. If college students were engaged in a day of volunteer service, they could make a huge difference in the Ohio state park system. The power of hundreds, or even thousands, of college students could improve the quality of parks and inspire others to visit new state parks. From this idea, Park-It! was born.
Park-It! is a statewide service initiative which focuses on building relationships between state parks, service organizations and institutions of higher education in the state of Ohio. The date is set for Saturday, September 29 to leverage the volunteer events already planned for NPLD and as extra encouragement to attract Park-It! volunteers.

Site of the Month State and federal land managers work together to improve recreation access

The Bureau of Land Management is partnering with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to build a fishing access trail in the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area on National Public Lands Day. At least 15 volunteers are needed to clear trail within the Ruby Mountain section of the park.
The Arkansas Headwaters is popular Colorado state park that features fishing, mountain biking, hiking, camping and rock climbing. Visitors can even try their luck at gold panning! The park is most widely recognized for fantastic whitewater rafting and kayaking trips down the Arkansas River.
Due to the devastating wildfires in Colorado, the Arkansas Headwaters is one of many state parks currently experiencing limited or full fire restrictions. Before camping in any park, visit the park website to learn about fire, flood, or additional safety warnings. Learn more about grilling and campfire safety at the U.S. Fire Administration website.
