The Outdoor Alliance Celebrates Partnerships for Public Lands Report highlights 19 success stories, including NPLD events | A report published by Outdoor Alliance showcases how collaborations between federal agencies and outdoor recreation organizations can lead to more Americans visiting their public lands. Nineteen projects were featured in the report including:
- Jackson Hole Trails Partnership in Wyoming
- Enhancing Public Access and Recreation in the Yampa River Basin in Colorado
- Stakeholder Engagement on Denali National Park in Alaska
- Read the report for other success stories (PDF)
Several of the projects in the report also have a history with National Public Lands Day. The Yosemite Facelift is a long time NPLD event that attracts thousands of volunteers to clean up the park over five days. The Yosemite Facelift is featured in the report because a partnership between the Yosemite Climbing Association and the National Park Service resulted in substantial restoration projects and litter clean-ups.
The partnership report summarizes the Outdoor Alliance Summit held in Golden, Colorado this past December. The summit, in response to the America's Great Outdoors Initiative, had over 150 attendees from government agencies, nonprofits and private organizations attend.
The Outdoor Alliance works to ensure the conservation and stewardship of our nation's land and waters through the promotion of sustainable, human-powered recreation. Members include, The Access Fund, American Canoe Association, American Hiking Society, American Whitewater, International Mountain Biking Association and the Winter Wildlands Alliance.

Site of the Month A field day to protect the history and ecology of Baltimore | A trip to Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Site provides visitors an interactive and engaging history lesson on the War of 1812 and Francis Scott Key's writing of the Star-Spangled Banner. What many visitors do not realize until they set foot on Fort McHenry is that the historic site also contains wetland habitat important to birds, crabs and fish.
The National Aquarium Conservation Team has made restoring the habitat of Fort McHenry one of their key initiatives. Twice a year, they host a field day to maintain trails, remove debris from the wetland and plant native plants in the nearby gardens. This year, the fall event celebrating National Public Lands Day occurs on October 6. More than 130 people are expected to lend a hand and maintain Fort McHenry for both the history enthusists who visit and the wildlife that call the fort home. For the National Aquarium, located 10 minutes away in downtown Baltimore, the wetland habitat of Fort McHenry is a real life example of their exhibits on Maryland wildlife and ecosystems. Protecting the natural resources of Fort McHenry serves as teaching tool and sets a positive example for the thousands of Baltimore schoolchildren who visit the Aquarium each year. To learn more about the Fort McHenry Field Day sponsored by the National Aquarium and National Park Service, visit their event page. |
