Dear NPLD Site Managers, Partners and Volunteers:
After a year of preparation, National Public Lands Day is almost here. This year's event is on track to be the largest in the program's history with volunteer projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories.
We encourage you to volunteer. Site managers should register NPLD events online, if you have not done so already.
With NPLD less than a week away, a few things for site managers to consider:
If you are not sure how to answer these questions, head to publiclandsday.org for suggestions, resources and downloadable guides.
If your event features a special guest, speakers, Let's Move Outside activities or special programming, please tell us about it. We want to acknowledge these sites. Email your event details to npld@neefusa.org.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the "Volunteers in Action" Photo Contest. The contest captures families, youth and site managers engaging in volunteer work on public lands across the nation.
The prizes include:
- 1st place: REI camping prize pack with a sleeping bag, 2-person tent with footprint and backpack (value approximately $600)
- 2nd place: REI 2-person tent, backpack, sleeping bag and water bottle worth (value approximately $175)
- 3rd place: REI sleeping bag, backpack and water bottles (value approximately $100)

2011 NPLD Signature Sites Announced
DC and Atlanta are hosting key events

A National Public Lands Day signature site is a volunteer event featuring special guests, speakers, unique programming or educational activities. This year, the signature sites are Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. and Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Ga.
Washington, D.C.: The
National Environmental Education Foundation and the National Park Service invite you to Rock Creek Park to volunteer and participate in a recreation and health fair. Over 200 volunteers will meet at eight different volunteer locations to beautify the park. Later, volunteers and the general public will meet at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center for a recreation and health fair. The REI Outdoor School will be on site hosting outdoor education activities.
Planned special guest speakers include the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Regina Benjamin, and Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Nancy Sutley. Learn more about the Rock Creek Park event.

Atlanta: Head to Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site on the morning of September 24 to take part of this growing annual event. The National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service, the Greening Youth Foundation, the REI Outdoor School, Park Pride and the city of Atlanta are hosting a park cleanup at MLK, Jr. National Historic Site and nearby Freedom Park.
Volunteers will meet at MLK, Jr. National Historic Site for opening ceremonies and a Let's Move Outside recreational activities. Planned speakers include City Councilman Kwanza Hall and George Dusenbury, Commissioner of the city of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts | |
NPLD has a special partnership with both the Girl Scouts of the USA and the Boy Scouts of America.
Scouts are invited to get involved with National Public Lands Day by volunteering at a local park, forest or other public land.
NPLD is an excellent opportunity to educate Boy and Girl Scouts about the natural world while engaging them in the outdoors. Register now.
If your Scout troop registers online with NPLD, they will receive volunteer certificates and Girl Scouts may be eligible to earn the Get with the Land patch.

Fee Free Day |
National Public Lands Day is a fee free day on many federally managed lands. Volunteers who participate on National Public Lands Day at federal land sites are rewarded with coupons for free entry into their favorite federal public land areas. |
