Dear NPLD Site Managers, Partners and Volunteers:greeting

June is officially National Great Outdoors Month. Public lands throughout the nation are celebrating by hosting educational fairs, volunteer activities and organizing recreation events to highlight how amazing being in the outdoors can be.

As a part of National Get Outdoors Month, consider starting a summer-long volunteer project that supports recreation and improves access to public lands. Summer-long volunteer projects can culminate on National Public Lands Day, September 24th.

If you are a site manager, consider registering an event for NPLD today. We've recently redesigned our website to give our site managers more tools and resources to promote their event online. We've also improved the registration process.

We hope that everybody has a good kickoff to summer celebrating National Great Outdoors Month. We look forward to seeing you outside.

Get out there!

States Show Their Support for NPLDstates

Five States Have Signed Memorandums of Mutual Support

With four months left before NPLD, five states have signed Memorandums of Mutual Support (MMS) with NPLD. A state park MMS encourages volunteerism and participation in NPLD from the park system. NPLD supports state parks by offering free tools and resources to host volunteer events on NPLD.

State park systems that formally support NPLD include:

Over 240 state parks participated in last year's NPLD. We are looking to increase that number by involving more state park systems in NPLD. NPLD is a great way to increase community involvement in state parks.

If you would like more information on developing an MMS with NPLD, contact Tracey Adams, senior program associate at 202-261-6479 or tadams@neefusa.org.

Save the Date! Social Media Webinar - July 13social

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is hosting its first webinar of the year on July 13 at 3 p.m. EST.  The webinar will focus on how site managers can use social media - twitter, facebook, flickr and other social media websites - to attract new visitors to their park and volunteer events. It will be fun, informative and free. Photo by Mary Chlan, Silver Spring, MD

The social media webinar is the first in a summer-long series of webinars focused on supporting NPLD site managers and Friends Groups. Look out for future webinars on tradtional media, planning NPLD events and ways that Friends Groups can improve their financial structure.

The webinar sign-up and updates will be posted on the NPLD Webinar Calendar as they become available.

If you have any questions about this webinar or the future webinar calendar, visit the NPLD website or email Jessica Jones, NPLD program coordinator, at jjones@neefusa.org.

NPLD Volunteer Project Wins Awardaward

Award Recognizes Efforts to Preserve Historic Military Lands

National Public Lands Day, the U.S. Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Base Quantico were award recipients of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Chairman's Award. The award recognizes achievements in historic preservation.

Marine Corps Base Quantico helped restore the archeological and natural resources of a historic Civil War camp highlighted on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. NPLD volunteers helped restore the site and install erosion controls.

NPLD thanks the Advisory Council of Historic Preservation for supporting public land volunteers and the U.S. Marine Corps for their continuing work to revitalize cultural and natural resource sites.

Restoring the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail with the Austin Parks Foundation

Austin Parks Foundation Logo

The Austin Parks Foundation, with support from the city of Austin, the Hill Country Conservancy and other partners, started an ambitious project last September to restore the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail.

The project is fueled by the hard-work of hundreds of volunteers who helped out at over 15 volunteer work days including NPLD 2010 and National Trails Day. The Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail project is expected to be completed this December and serve as a signature recreation trail right in the heart of Austin.

The Austin Parks Foundation celebrates National Public Lands Day each year and it has turned into one of their largest volunteer celebrations. This year, over 250 people are expected to help pull invasive species, landscape and pick up trash on the trail and the surrounding public land. Visit their NPLD event page for more details.
