Dear NPLD Site Managers, Partners and Volunteers:
Let the countdown begin! We are only 9 weeks away from the 17th annual National Public Lands Day. We estimate over 170,000 people will make a difference by volunteering at over 2,300 public land sites around the country, making 2010 the most successful NPLD to date.
This year, we are asking site managers to consider promoting the recreational opportunities that public lands have to offer. We want to have the same great volunteer day, but also remind volunteers that recreational activities are a few of the many reasons why people should work to protect public lands. After the workday is complete, lead your volunteers on a short hike, host a BioBlitz, show them a cycling trail, or maybe organize a fishing derby! You can also host a play event. Our partners at KaBOOM! have several ideas that you can select from. Of course, we still want you to have the best volunteer event you can. We continue to build new partnerships and resources that site managers can take advantage of. Please consider tuning in on July 28, for the NPLD Media Webinar for Site Managers. This webinar is developed specifically for site managers who are looking to get a little more media attention for their volunteer workday through the use of press releases and social media.
While our staff has been busy planning for our September 25th NPLD event, we have also been working hard to educate the public on the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to our public lands. Recently, we launched a new Gulf Oil Spill and Public Lands webpage that outlines a short history of the spill, resources to learn and teach about the spill and how interested volunteers in the Gulf region can help.
Thank you for your continued support and participation in the Public Lands Program and National Public Lands Day. We look forward to another wonderful year celebrating our public lands.
Get out there!

| Pennsylvania Supports NPLD
Will your state join the Keystone State?
With so much of our nation's public lands managed at the state level, it only seems fitting that NPLD receive support from state governments. State parks systems and NPLD share the same goals - to get the public outdoors and volunteering to protect public lands.
For the third year in a row, Pennsylvania is the first state to sign an annual Memorandum of Support for NPLD. The Keystone State has pledged to encourage their state park managers to register their sites as places to volunteer on September 25. In return, NPLD will work with Pennsylvania to assist with their volunteer efforts and land managers working on the ground.
If you work for a state park agency and would like to sign a Memorandum of Support with NPLD, please email npld@neefusa.org for more information. |
| Happy Anniversary to the National Landscape Conservation System
Celebrating 10 Years of BLM's NLCS |
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS). The NLCS is a collection of wilderness areas, monuments, trails and scenic rivers that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) works to protect. Sites in the NLCS include some of the western United States most beautiful and awe-inspiring public lands.
The 10th anniversary celebration is occuring throughout the year at many BLM sites. See if an event is happening near you.
At a NPLD event in Alaska, the Paxson Lake Campground celebrated the NLCS anniversary by providing posters and pins to those who volunteered. Projects at Paxson Lake included, removing an aging boardwalk, clearing brush and planting native seeds and trees. Celebrate the NLCS anniversary at your NPLD event! Register today. |

Jennings Environmental Education Center
The Jennings Environmental Education Center is located in Slippery Rock, Pa. The park provides a unique opportunity for western Pennsylvania residents to visit a prairie ecosystem and learn about prairie wildlife and plants through children and adult programming.
During NPLD 2009, Jennings had 83 volunteers clear trail, remove invasive plants, rebuild a split rail fence, put up trail signs and prepare for the spring maple syrup season, among other activities.
We're excited to see what happens at the Jennings Environmental Education Center at this year's NPLD! |
