Dear NPLD Site Managers, Partners and Volunteers,

National Public Lands Day, now in its 17th year, is already the nation's largest singe-day volunteer event and it continues to grow. This year promises to be the biggest and best yet. We hope you have set September 25 in your calendars.

This year, our focus is to educate our estimated 175,000 volunteers about how climate change can affect public lands by offering online resources that everybody can use to educate themselves and others leading up to September 25 and beyond. We will also be showcasing recreational opportunities and health benefits that our public lands offer from places as large and majestic as Grand Canyon National Park to neighborhood parks around the block.  But our primary goal for National Public Lands Day continues to be promoting volunteerism and service and, most of all, getting our hands dirty for our public lands!

Registration is already open at www.publiclandsday.org. It's never too early to start planning. While you are at our site, give it a quick tour and check out some of the other things we are doing as we launch our Public Lands Program. Our  "Capacity Building Grant"  winners have just been announced and we have just launched our  "Power of Friends"  webinar series that offers land managers and friend organizations tools for organizational health.

Thank you for your continued support for and participation in the Public Lands Program and National Public Lands Day. Enjoy your public lands!

Our Program

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve America's public lands. NPLD began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. On Sept. 26, 2009, 150,000 volunteers lent a hand at more than 2,000 locations across the nation. Join us for the next National Public Lands Day on Sept. 25, 2010.

National Public Lands Day is now part of a broader Public Lands Program which aims to increase the capacity of public lands stewards to engage local communities to help care for our public lands. The Public Lands Program will provide online training resources, networking opportunities and small grants to increase the capacity of friends groups to work more effectively with public land managers and strengthen the reach of National Public Lands Day.
