I'm a little confused.
I have girlfriends who rave about the
movie Sex & the City. They go on and on about how the four
friends in the movie are there for each other through thick and
thin. How they are all so different, yet love being together. How supportive they are for each other.
And because I work almost exclusively
with women, I also hear women groan about women working together. About hurt feelings. About pettiness. About drama and personal
problems.
So why is a movie about the value of
girlfriends -- so popular, yet when it comes to the work place, we
talk about how hard it is for women to work with women?
And why is it that workplace problems
involving women get chalked up simply to "too much estrogen?"
It's complicated. (No, I'm not
talking about that other movie. That's another subject entirely!)
Maybe one reason women complain about
working together is that we bring our expectations of how our
relationships with friends and family work into the workplace.
Maybe we're not comfortable with
competition.
Maybe we're not really communicating
as directly as we could.
If you'd like to learn more about women
working with women, you'll enjoy my DVD called The Ladies
Room. Buy it today and get a free t-shirt!
Go ahead. See if "too much estrogen"
is really the cause of your workplace issues.
