President Obama signed a law on April 13, 2011 that repeals the 1099 tax reporting provision of the National Health Care law.

The widely unpopular rule would have required businesses to report all purchases of goods or services of more than $600 a year to the IRS on a form 1099-MISC.

Thinking Of Retiring - Or Know Someone Who Is?

Nest EggAs we approach retirement, it is vital to pay attention to some key financial questions. Here are some items to check. For more information, see the
"Links We Like" section at left.

HEALTH INSURANCE:  Are you among the lucky few who will continue to be covered after retirement?  If not, you will need to plan for replacement coverage.  If you're eligible for Medicare, then check the benefits, and look into  "Medigap" coverage as well if necessary.

TIP: Before retiring, take care of any non-emergency medical, dental, or optical needs if your employee plan coverage is broader than Medicare.

OTHER TYPES OF INSURANCE:  Once retired, you may need to replace employer-provided life insurance with extra coverage.  Consider purchasing long-term health care insurance in case of a lengthy nursing home stay in the future.

SOCIAL SECURITY:  Decide if taking early Social Security benefits (age 62) is a good decision rather than waiting until full retirement age.  You can get 80% of your benefits at age 62.

TIP: For most people, taking Social Security benefits at their full retirement age makes the most financial sense.  If you're thinking of taking Social Security early, be sure to do the math first.

COMPANY PLAN PAYOUT:  Plan well in advance how you will take the payout from your pension or 401(k) plan.  Know where you want to transfer the funds and how they will be invested.

RELOCATION:  If you are planning to move to another state, explore the financial and medical ramifications of living there before you move.  It can be difficult finding a doctor that will take NEW Medicare patients.

Ever Wonder Why We Take a "Coffee Break"?

A coffee break is a routine social gathering for a snack and downtime practiced by employees in business and industry.  The coffee break allegedly originated in Stoughton, Wisconsin, with the wives of Norwegian immigrants.  The term subsequently became poplar through a Pan-American Coffee Bureau ad campaign of 1952 which urged consumers to  "Give yourself a Coffee-Break - and Get What Coffee Gives to You".

More generally, the phrase "coffee break" has also come to denote any break from work.
