Summer Vacation

The rains have finally stopped, the air has cooled, the sun is shining, and excitement is in the air. Summer vacation has arrived in San Andres, Guatemala. In mid-October the kids finished their projects and exams and said good-bye to their teachers until mid-January when the new school year begins. During school vacation, Sebastian and Oralia are very good at keeping the kids busy. The older girls are taking turns learning to cook and playing with the pre-schoolers. The older boys are starting on work projects around the home.

Education is not assumed in this culture, so each grade a child completes is a huge milestone worth celebrating! We are proud to say that all but two of the children were promoted to the next grade level. The two little girls that didn't pass have special needs. Special education isn't offered in the area public school system, so these kids repeat the grade until they pass. With tutoring this summer and outside help during the school year, we anticipate they will both pass next year.

On October 28th, weGraduation celebrated the 6th Grade graduation ceremony of three of our girls: Cata, Blanca, and Wendy. In mid-November we will celebrate the High School graduation of Lorena and Luis, the Directors' son. We are so proud of all five of them!

Most of the kids have come from tough situations and are behind in their studies. When a teen reaches 18 and hasn't finished high school, they have the option to find a job and live on their own or to stay at the home and complete High School.

The Home of Life goal is to help the graduates reach their full potential as young adults. For some (See What's Next for Lorena?) this means college, so the Home helps them find a school, a job, and other resources they may need.
What a Thanksgiving!
Tim and Dena April 2011

We can be thankful because our God is faithful. Incredibly faithful, filling us with delight as He channels His faithfulness through you, our ministry partners.

We began the year coping with the perfect financial storm that struck a devastating blow to the Home of Life in Costa Rica. Yet in the aftermath, we've been able to continue pouring out Jesus' love so that children continue to grow and heal, and graduations, family reconciliations, and adoptions go on.   The playground in Guatemala is complete and the new maintenance building in Costa Rica is well on its way. The long-awaited security fence in Costa Rica is up along the front. And, we'll end the year with the Home of Life in Costa Rica in a much stronger financial condition.

God continues to pour out His grace through our ministry partners: staff, faith missionaries, visiting teams and financial supporters. So as we gather to give thanks, let's join in thanking God for allowing us to have a part in what He is doing in the lives the children. And if for you, this is a season of special giving, would you prayerfully consider if God would have you make a generous gift to help the Homes of Life make a great start into 2012?

Delighting in His love,

Tim and Dena

Luisito: Kids Will be Kids!
Staff meeting was just ending when one of the older girls brought in 3-year old Luisito. Luisito had decided to play "barber" and had cut his hair . . .to the scalp . . . right in the front middle of his head. When asked why he did that, his answer was, "Because I wanted to be bald like Norman." His wish came true, because the only way tLuisito and Norman Baldo make him look presentable was to shave off the rest of his hair. Norman got the clippers and completed the job. Now Luisito is telling everyone that he and Norman are twins.
