Seeds of Hope

Over the weekend, I ran into a former Nurture Home volunteer who devoted many, many hours to a young mother at Nurture Home, who ultimately did not have a successful outcome. In the backseat of her car sat the four year old of this former resident. Bright, smiling and bubbly, the child had been adopted by our former volunteer. She looked back at the child and said "Do you remember Miss Lisa?  She's one of the ladies how helped mommy so much". The little girl smiled, kicked her feet excitedly and hugged her little teddy bear tightly. I told the volunteer she "had made my day".  I told them goodbye and turned to walk away, when the former volunteer said, "She said she remembers now, you were a very nice lady." Often, the individuals who are served through our programs choose to abandon our interventions, our ideas, our recommendations. That's probably the most difficult part of this work; but, I firmly believe that you give all you can and do the good you can, resting in the fact that the people we serve will receive at least a "seed" of how life can be better. We don't always get the chance to see the harvest. When we do, it's great!

Collaboration

Last week, Peggy Ford, Executive Director of Children's Place Inc. called seeking the name of the uncle of a child who had previously lived at Nurture Home. We talked about the needs of the child and the significant losses he had faced. I was able to connect her to this child's uncle in hopes that Children's Place will be able to help this little boy. The previous week, Vicki Bukovitz, Executive Director of ACTS, Inc. was our speaker at Aiken Kiwanis Club. After sharing an overview of the services provided by her agency she graciously shared a story that demonstrated the importance of collaboration between partner agencies. She shared of her encounter with a pregnant, desperate, homeless young woman who now resides at Nurture Home. Next thing you know, I met a family who had a place to live, but needed furniture. I called Karen at ACTS, Inc. and they assisted.  This is what we do here in Aiken as partner United Way agencies. Be assured of that uniquely strong collaboration among agencies when you pledge your support this year!

RISE

This year, I celebrated my birthday with two guys with tattoos and nose rings! Before you speculate about my "mid-life crisis", let me explain! My husband, board members and 20 or so friends from our monthly Suicide Bereavement support group all came out to welcome the RISE tour to raise awareness of the devastating effects of suicide. We enjoyed BBQ, peach cobbler and sweet tea while everyone had the chance to share touching,
personal stories. I commend these guys for their efforts and I thank them for ending our get together with these instructions: "Go home and do something for yourself, abandon your guilt and do something that makes you feel happy!" You can follow their progress at www.risephoenix.org . We continue to  support the survivors of this loss and to work hard to prevent suicide. We have some great ideas for upcoming speakers and events,
so stay in touch!

Gratefully,
