5 Resolutions That We Can ALL Keep
(At Least Some of The Time)
Aisha Pope, LCSW
It's January, and that means that many of us are looking ahead and planning out our upcoming year, setting goals (and resolutions) and just in general wanting to start the year off on the right foot. Often our goals are so lofty and we're so human that we don't even make it past the first few days! Here are a few little things you can do this year that will work just fine even if you only do them some of the time, and that you can easily get back to if you fall off the wagon:1) Set realistic short term goals - don't focus on the whole year ahead. Set a goal for the month, the week, or even the day that builds towards a bigger long term goal. 2) Ask for help. So often we go off on our own trying to do all and be all, when those who love us would happily lend a hand. This year ask someone for help. It'll mean as much to them to help as it does to you to get the help. 3) Once a month, do something you've never done before. Always wanted to try horseback riding? Always in a rush when you're at the bookstore but wish you could try out those comfy chairs? Always wanted to skydive (hey to each his own). This year do it. 4) Sleep 8 hours a night (I can just hear those of you who know me yelling 'hypocrite!!'). Like I said, even if you only do this some of the time, you will reap the benefits. 5) Don't forget to laugh. The benefits to your health and mood of taking time to laugh every day are well documented. Give yourself that gift, and remember it's contagious so spread it around! |

Disconnect To Reconnect In 2011
Talin Yesaie, MFT
Lately I've been noticing that cell phones, laptops, and other "on the go" internet devices that make our live easier today also have some major downfalls. My cell phone was supposed to help me become more connected to my friends and family, but in reality I find myself more disconnected. I find myself checking my email on my phone then responding much later than planned and sometimes not at all. Emails have replaced letters, texts have replaced phone calls and greeting cards have become electronic. Having the ease of the constant connection to others has made it in some ways more difficult to connect and relate to others. Often things are misinterpreted. Tone of voice is an important part of communicating effectively but that is difficult to convey in writing. Cell phones used to be used to make a call when not at home. Now, cell phones are phones, computers, toys and instant sources of information that we carry with us constantly for fear of missing something. I find myself more impatient and unable to wait without using it in line waiting for a cashier. They are in our pockets, purses, on our bedside tables, and even on the table while we eat. Sometimes we forget to enjoy what is right in front of us because we are so busy worrying about what we have missed.
So this year, I, Talin Yesaie, am promising to live more in the minute. I promise to pay more attention to others, maintain eye contact, not eat with my phone on the table, text less, call more, and use more stamps. I promise to call my friends more than "post on their wall." I promise to use my cell phone more to make plans with others, and leave it in my purse (or maybe even at home) when I'm out carrying out those plans. I'm planning to disconnect to reconnect in 2011, so friends, I hope you like my voice, cause you're about to hear a whole lot more of it! |
