Greetings!

Happy Summer! What a wonderful time of year to live in Milwaukee, with its vibrant community gardens, farmers markets, fun runs, bicycle opportunities, and access to many events and outdoor activities. Make sure to check out some of our MCOPP partners' upcoming events listed to the right.

Information about our August 7th MCOPP Leadership Team meeting can also be found to the right. We invite you to join us.

Scroll down to read about a recent training in which MCOPP partner Playworks Milwaukee played an important role.

We welcome your participation in MCOPP and with our subcommittees that are working on policy and environment change strategies focused on: (1) healthy food and beverages; (2) land use opportunities for active lifestyles, healthy eating, and recreation; (3) active living; and (4) curriculum and professional development. Please contact us if you are interested in serving on a subcommittee.

Join us in our mission of working together for healthy eating and active living. We envision a Milwaukee with reduced childhood obesity where the healthy choice is the easy choice. Thanks for your support of the Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project.

Best wishes,

Sarah O'Connor (MCOPP Manager, United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee) & David Nelson (MCOPP Director, Medical College of Wisconsin)

Playworks Milwaukee leads session at Milwaukee Christian Center staff training

What does a staff training conjure up in your mind? At the Milwaukee Christian Center June 15th staff training day at Kosciuszko Community Center, youth-serving staff got to play! Thanks to a partnership established through MCOPP, Playworks Milwaukee led a session about engaging youth in physical activity through play.

Playworks is a national nonprofit organization that supports learning by providing safe, healthy and inclusive play and physical activity to low-income schools at recess and throughout the entire school day. Playworks also provides training and technical support for schools and youth organizations that wish to train their own adults to manage a healthy and inclusive playground.

A huge thank you to our Playworks Milwaukee partners--Executive Director Kristina Olkowski and Program Manager PJ Dever--who taught the participants several popular games. They reviewed ways to manage a group of youth during physical activity play and ways to promote team-building and fun and they recommended a technique for youth to use to quickly mediate their differences.

Let the games begin!
