Greetings!

Happy spring! MCOPP remains busy working towards our goals of organizational policy and environment changes that improve access to healthy eating and active living opportunities. We are very pleased to announce that MCOPP now has an updated website--check it out at www.uncom-milw.org/mcopp.

Information about our upcoming April 3rd meeting can be found to the right. Please RSVP as soon as possible if you have not yet done so and plan to attend.

The article below recaps MCOPP's inaugural Healthy Eating and Active Living Staff Training. Thanks to our partners who helped and attended, it was a successful and fun training. We are already looking forward to the next one!

We welcome your participation in MCOPP and with our subcommittees that are working on policy and environment change strategies focused on: (1) healthy food and beverages; (2) land use opportunities for active lifestyles, healthy eating, and recreation; (3) active living; and (4) curriculum and professional development. Please contact us if you are interested in serving on a subcommittee.

Join us in our mission of working together for healthy eating and active living. We envision a Milwaukee with reduced childhood obesity where the healthy choice is the easy choice. Thanks for your support of the Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project.

Best wishes,

David Nelson (MCOPP Director) and

Sarah O'Connor (MCOPP Manager)

MCOPP Healthy Eating and Active Living Staff Training

An inaugural professional development opportunity for direct service staff at UNCOM partner agencies.

On February 29, 2012, more than twenty employees at UNCOM partner agencies came to Neighborhood House of Milwaukee for the 2-hour Healthy Eating and Active Living Staff Training. The training was organized and provided by MCOPP's dedicated partners. After an introduction to the issue of childhood obesity and a lesson on determining a child's perceived rate of exertion, the group spilt into three smaller groups that rotated through three sessions related to physical activity and nutrition. Before wrapping-up, participants chose one of the three sessions to return to for additional information and training. Staff who attended reported that they were energized, interested, and learned something new that they would take back to their agencies and use in their youth and family programming.
