Greetings!

Over the next few issues we will answer questions asked by real patients. Often one person's question may be what has been on your mind or its the one thing that will take your weight loss to the next level. TV and companies trying to sell us "stuff" make us think its all about eating less calories and exercise. If it were that easy everyone could easily lose weight, yet many of us battle. My next two patient X stories will illustrate why you must focus on complying with the low carb higher protein diet, and why you can't workout alone to defeat bad dietary choices.

"I'm not hungry can I eat just one meal a day"

Before we get into this remember our philosophy. Controlling blood sugar (which controls insulin) through lower carbs and getting protein makes you lose weight. Diet pills help you controll your behavior to ease the change to the new dietary style and control binges..




 

 

The pill makes me full I'm not hungry

 

PATIENT X, came into our office last week and is in her 30's. Over the past few years she gained about 70lbs and feels like she needs to get the weight off as quickly as possible, as she felt it was effecting her job and marriage. I was so impressed, because she fully understood the diet and was determined to make changes. She was happy she found us and found areas of her diet where there was room for improvement. A few days after being on Phentermine, she sent me an email and stated 

I am doing well with the diet pills, but 3 meals and two snacks a day is difficult. Is it possible to eat one healthy meal and two small snacks daily, and still see fast results? 

 

OUR RESPONSE -  Unfortunately not. Weight loss is about making changes which take some time. All the changes will not take place at once but it's the drive to change that is important (THE WEIGHT WILL COME OFF IF YOU ARE PERSISTENT). Basically Patient X asked can you eat a little bit of food to lose weight. This will work temporarily but you will lose muscle (muscle burns fat). Also from seeing over 3000 patients, people who try to eat one meal a day, can do it for awhile and will lose some weight at first, but they eventually fail and the weight returns. They fail because diet pills suppress appetite in your brain, but all the cells of your body need a certain amount of fuel (food). If you don't get your minimum food intake, at some point your body will fight through the pill and you will binge (see the Minnesota Semi Starvation Study ). In the study men ate only 1000 calories a day (semi starvation for a man) for many weeks. When they came off the strict diet the rebound hunger was so great that many of the guys ate as many as 10,000 calories a day.  If you do not eat enough of the right foods in a day you will binge. This is why most of our patients who eat once a day are the most overweight.

THE SOLUTION

 

If you truly don't feel like eating, I encourage you to find a good protein shake meal replacement or a good meal replacement bar.  You can find one yourself or go on one of our custom plans which includes bars and shakes. If you are not hungry you can at least drink your nutrition. The Cornerstone shake is the best product out and our meal replacement plan cost about the same as what you are spending on food right now. You would do two shakes per day one meal and eat two small snacks. This would be the fastest way for you to lose weight. Patients on the shakes lose weight at a faster rate. They are high protein, low carb meals that keep INSULIN LEVELS LOW, this is what the shake was designed for. ----- (HIGH INSULIN IS WHY WE GAIN WEIGHT) . If your body senses you are starving by eating one meal a day it will slow the metabolic process and you will not lose weight.

I lost weight the first month - now I'll eat what I want and exercise.

Patient Y came in the office last week, for her third visit (60 day visit).  30 days after joining the program (the first month) she had lost about 8 pounds which is excellent for someone who only weighs 180lbs (if this PT lost 8 pounds four months in a row she would lose almost 40 pounds...to be 43 and 140 lbs would be awesome). On her 60 day visit she had not lost any weight. When we got into the details of her diet she stated that she felt she could stop cutting carbs and workout to cover the difference. Again unfortunately, TV has made us think you can workout to lose major amounts of weight. I shared my personal example with her, as I will with you. I want to lose 12 pounds this month (3 lbs per week) which is very aggressive. I loaded my workout plan and diet into the computer to see what I  needed to do. I put in that I would  run 30 minutes 7 days a week on my elliptical trainer. This works out to 17.5 miles a week. The results showed me my my 17.5 miles equated to a half of a pound of weight loss. Diet would control the other 2.5 pounds I want to lose. What does this mean?  Diet is the primary driver of weight loss and you already know what you eat matters more than the calories. CUT YOUR CARBS - GET LEAN PROTEIN TO MAKE YOU FULL. 

Why do we excercise then. Excercise builds muscle and muscle increases your metablism which make you burn fat faster over time. The more muscle you have the faster you will lose fat. Excercise also helps lower insulin levels for up to two days. 

INSULIN IS WHY WE GAIN WEIGHT - INSULIN INCREASE IN THE BODY WHEN BLOOD SUGAR GETS TO HIGH.
