Changing life-long habits and human behavior is one of the hardest things to do. If any of you know anyone who has faced any type of addiction you know this reality first hand. Changing over to our dietary system can be confusing for some, because for years you have tried calorie counting concepts that have not worked. To be honest, the science shows us you will lose weight with any diet system if you stick to it.  However, low-carb protein based diets help people lose weight faster than any other system and is sustainable for life. This month we will focus on foods and ways to understand the diet more thoroughly. (Please note that while we do not count calories our diet is low calorie)

I'm A Tad Confused - Help 

 

If you are a bit confused by the blood sugar control diet system we discussed, we understand. You have been eating a certain way for many years and every time you want to lose weight you basically have tried to eat less of the same foods that make you gain weight. From talking with patients, we have come up with why most people are confused.

Trying to eat as little food as possible 

a. When you eat tiny amounts of foods, you are setting yourself to get hungry in an hour or so. And guess what? You over eat at the next meal. For example a patient asked "can't I just eat a box of vegetables for lunch? Would this box of vegetable below, hold an adult for four hours? No, but the vegetables and a palm sized piece of protein would keep you full.

b. Losing weight is not about not eating. It's about controlling hormones, if you do not eat enough food your body thinks you are starving (losing energy), then your body floods you with your fat (energy) storage hormone, insulin.

c. YOU MUST EAT EVERY 5 HOURS - Every 4-5 hours your body thinks you are then floods you with insulin, in an attempt to save you. If you eat this flood of fat storage hormone never comes. (The whole point of this diet is to stop this flood of insulin)

Looking for foods with the perfect mix of protein and carbs - (you will need to combine foods)

  • a. Some patients have told me they were confused because they could not find foods that were both their carb number and protein number. For example a patient told me she could not find frozen vegetables that had enough protein.
  • b. Carbs are Carbs - Protein is Protein - while most foods have mix of protein and carbs, one is usually much higher than the other. For example a slice of bread has about a gram or two of protein, but it has about 30grams of carbs. Therefore think of it as a carb
     
  •  

Not reading food labels

  • It cracks me up that many people will not read food labels. I have seen people in AutoZone or Wal-Mart spend 10 minutes picking up and reading every bottle of oil to make sure they don't damage their car; yet they won't spend 20 seconds reading food labels to make sure they buy low carb food.

 

  • Again, if you read your food labels, you will find you have lots of choices. The choices may be different that what you are used to; but I guarantee you will find food you like. Look at our protein bars, they taste like candy, but they are filled with protein and have the right amount of carbs.
     

 Hanging on to Calorie Counting Concepts & Getting "sold" by Health Marketing

a. Low fat does not mean it's good for weight loss

b. Stop trying to eat tiny amounts of food

c. Stop feeling guilty, trying to stick to 1000 calorie diet is incredibly difficult if you weigh over 100 lbs.

Just cause its healthy does not mean it's good for weight loss

a. A glass of orange juice is healthy, but if you drink one glass every day you will be fighting off about 11lbs per year. Two glasses 22lbs.....

b. 3 Tbs of raisins has the same carbs as a cup of ice cream.
