History
of the House:
Lions
Gate, the architectural marvel of Atlanta architect Robert Green, was created
and built from 1970 - 1972. Although most recognized by the notoriety and
fascinating history of its owners, Lions Gate remains one of the nation's most
admired estates with its imposing English Tudor style and breathtaking grounds
that open from a majestic and massive wrought iron entrance atop a hill of
sprawling fauna and flora.
Created
as a family home fit with 18 acres of open grounds and approximately 12,000
square feet of flowing, gracious living space, Michael Thevis envisioned this
masterpiece which became the dreamland home of the Thevis family for 13
years. While history mainly reflects back to the acclaimed and colorful
history of Thevis as a porn king and music recording mogul, Lions Gate served as
the homestead for a brood of five young, active kids whose memories reflect on
the home's grand design, the magnificent entrance rotunda, and a professional
16mm movie projector with retractable screen - a not so common feature in the
early 70's. Throughout every season, the home offered a pool complex with
two heated pools, a waterfall, orchardstone bridge and a cabana with two
dressing rooms and bath. Leading from this area were landscaped pathways
to a three acre pasture, stables and a tennis court. Architecturally, most
unique of Lions Gate was its use of unusual multi-colored slate on four turrets
and cable style roof - features still preserved today. Superbly
constructed with meticulous attention to detail, formal and informal space
provided elegant entertainment as well as the most casual gatherings.
Complimenting the natural and open flow to the layout of the home still remains
5,000 approximate square feet of surrounding patio and terrace areas, accessible
from all major rooms of the first floor. A first of its kind, the estate
offered a world class gourmet kitchen with three ovens, a microwave, two
dishwashers, three sinks, two stoves, built-in food warmers and toasters, food
center and three grills and of course top of the line cabinets and floors.
Lavish in every way, Lions Gate was a design maiden of the exceptionally
talented Sid Shier, still a recognized design genius now retired in
Atlanta. Posh and elegant, the home compared to none for its era and in
1972 was the largest home built in the United States.
Lions
Gate's brilliant beginnings darkened after the estate sold in 1984 to a
developer who subdivided the acreage surrounding the home. Future owner
Bobby Brown, significantly modified the home masking much of the distinctive
interior stone with paint and mirrored large areas of the home, covering and
removing most of the original and priceless murals on the walls and
ceilings. Brown and his new wife Whitney Houston occupied the home for six
years before the estate surrendered to foreclosure. An international
couple purchased the home but neglected it during their ten years of ownership
and the estate was in foreclosure for the second time in its history.
In
July 2008, Tony Thevis, one of the Thevis children who grew up in the home,
arranged the purchase of Lions Gate out of foreclosure and prevented the estate
from being torn down and the property subdivided by real estate developers.
Over the past 20 months, the home has been restored to all of its
retrievable original state. The home features seven bedrooms, six
bathrooms, three powder rooms, its original grand den, gaming den, study, dining
room, countless common areas, distinctive turrets, sprawling patio, pool area,
and beautifully landscaped 3.19 acre grounds.
